Motorola 710

Digital Pimp

Jul 30, 2004, 4:02 PM
The 710 has arrived here in Indiana. I have checked out the phone and it is sweet. Lots of features and 1.2 megapixel camera to boot. Bluetooth is the extra part for those people using bluetooth accessories and/or bluetooth capable products. (Hewlett Packard for instance) Tri-mode phone. On phonescoop it says not released but it has shown up in some stores so check your local retailers to see if they have received it if you were waiting on it to be available. 😎

how is that? The 7000 isn't megapixel. The motorola is. I tried the camera out and it is nicer than the 7000. The 7000 is nice also, but I bet if you wanted to print the pictures out the 710 would be a clearer picture.

I'm actually a digital camera guru in addition to knowing a thing or two about cell phones, so let me interject. Camera phones are crap, period. At least for now, anyway. It hardly even matters which ones are megapixel cameras and which aren't, because the lenses are so small and cheap that you will never get a high quality image either way. Not to mention the fact that even with a regular digital camera with a good lens, a 1.3 megapixel image is barely printable. To be honest, if they put more effort into the optics of camera phones rather than concentrating only on the resolution, you might actually get decent prints. Once the two megapixel and higher camera phones start making it here, it will be a little better, but there is still ...

I agree with this, one of the main reasons I have no desire for a camera phone and stick with my seperate 4 mega pixel dig cammera for the quick and dirty and my old Cannon 35mm film cammera when I want something really good (gift from my dad, things worth like $200-300)

Hey I'm with ya on that, my 3.2 megapixel Kodak does a great job as far as I'm concerned. Wish it had an optical zoom instead of digital, but it does what I need it to. I could care less about a camera in a phone. the only reason I can think of using it is to replace the little plastic photo holder in my wallet that's tryin to fall apart. Pics of my girlfriend and whatnot. But sadly all the "high end" phones that I like and have bluetooth (mainly what I'm lookin for) have cameras.

Again, I'm glad you're happy with the 710, some morons are just too damn picky.

There is nothing wrong with having the Camera option on the phone guys. It's there to use when you need to take a quick pic when you aren't carrying your $200-$1000+ camera.

If you don't want to use the camera don't press the camera button or pick it in the menu options. Regardless if it's megapixel or not, the megapixel camera would be a better choice if you were to take a picture ever in your 22 month contract. Which most people do and have pics of their friends, a picture of the beach where they went on vacation, etc. on the display. Or attach a picture of the person you sto...

All that's true, but my scholastic focus was medecine, and though it looks like I might be in wireless for a while I do want to go back to the OR eventually. There are privace laws in place called HIPAA (I'm sure you've heard of them) that are eventually, at least I think so, gonna get camera phones banned in hospitals around the world. I've got no problem with there being a camera on a phone (in fact I've been caught without one in several occasions where it might have been useful, like a day trip to the lake with my gf or family), but ya gotta admit it IS really hard to find a good high end phone without one these days. And most OR's are buried in the center of hospitals where low-end phones won't pick up worth a damn.

Just my 2 cent...

I talked to the Verizon store about this phone, and Houston, we have a problem(s). The ONLY way to get the pictures out of the phone is via the proprietary mini-SD card. You also have to buy a card reader and software for your PC. You can NOT use the bluetooth link to send the photos to your Bluetooth enabled PC. It doesn't work (part of the reason for having Bluetooth, right?). The Bluetooth will not work with ANY other devices except those from Verizon. You can send the photos to others, but guess what? There is a monthly fee (yes, from Verizon) for up to 20 photos; then you get charged per photo.
What seems like a cool phone has been "Verizoned" by...

i don't think some people understand.... if they call it bluetooth, it should work like standard bluetooth. if it will only operate with certain VZW gear, then what's the point of having bluetooth anyway? if it really requires VZW accessories, it probably wont work in cars, or 3rd party headsets, computers (except some microsoft ones), PDAs? Laptops?
in addition to syncing data, it is nice to have BT to connect a PDA/Laptop to a phone as a modem.

honestly.... that sucks. maybe i have a lot of reason to complain because Verizon is in bed with microsoft, so us Mac and Linux users have no BT option to sync or transfer data/files. i heard the phone will sync with the new Apple sync beta software WITH A CABLE. as all Mac/Linux users know......

Actually, it doesn't need Verizon only accesories to work. It can still transmit to other BT capable accesories. The big blow up is that the "handsfree" "headset" and other such profiles are the only ones that are enabled. Some of the profiles that people want, but interferes with GIN functions have been disabled. Like transfering pictures to or gettin ringtones from your personal computer. They want you to use GIN to send pics and get new ringtones, this is one way that they make profit.

People seem to forget that carriers don't actually make a terrible amonut of profit thru your contracts. A lot of that money is used to make up the considerable loss that the company takes for underselling the handset units. Things like GIN and billing for text messages are common to all carriers and that's one BIG way they make profit. They work like the impulse buy counters in the supermarkets.

But Verizon making the MOST money and having the MOST customers surly would not seek to squeeze their lemmings for every single cent....would they?

Locking GSM phones is a fairly standard policy implemented by most wireless companies around the world. Most provide unlock codes after a certain period of time. In many countries, it is pretty cheap to get a phone unlocked by a third party.

This is a personal opinion but Verizon's meddling with the V710's BT is really cheeky considering that when a phone is offered with BT features, that involves some general standards and expectations. By charging premiums for some of these otherwise standard features, VZW is making money on something that should otherwise be free. Some may call this a marketing step, but really it's a dirty move. (like charging for bloody games)
