O.K. guys,
I now that I have ask this question already and been getting yes or no asnwers from customer service and agents.
My question is, can i buy a prepaid phone, lets say from walmart and activate on a post paid account? The reason why I want to buy the phone is, that is my father in-laws birthday and i was looking on getting him a new phone. Because the one that he has is the motorola v60i which he had for way to many years (the phone has had way more accidents than any phone I had, the phone will only charge went it wants to, theres dirt all over and inside too, there way too many think to list). Another question is, will the insurance cover those phones if in the near future something happens to it?
In addition, I have loo...

ESN's that are prepaid are now listed as to be activated ONLY on prepaid plans. However, I have seen this done. So the short anwser is no it should not be done at all. The long answer is that it MAY be possible depending on who you talk to.
Verizon is shutting the door on that though because of this very issue. It used to be easy...just buy the phone and do the ESN change. Now it is not so clear.
Good luck with it all. But remember that if he has problems with the phone Walmart will tell you to hit the bricks. An agent or store would (typically) stand behind what they sell.

I second what Eagle said
...
if you get phone at walmart, then just make certain it isnt activated on prepaid. then if your dad has his account set up under my account on vzw web site.then he/you should be able to just do a esn change under activate phone. use existing phone part for activating.
...
That is incorrect, they have flagged all the phones sold at walmart and other prepaid phones so they cannot be activated on a post paid plan. If he does this he will be stuck with a phone that is only capiable of being activated on prepaid.
...
well know one person who just did it yesterday. and know a few that have did it over last 2 weeks. and by what store told them.was new stock.
...
eddy listen to wfine. mitchell1 is incorrect as usual. all phones sold at third party stores like walmart or best buy are flagged and will not be able to be added to a postpay account anymore. they started doing that when walmart signed on. sorry but the only way would be to buy a phone on ebay or at a retail location. sorry.
...
hey guys,
first of all i want to say, thank you all for your reply. Second, I just got off the phone with the walmart guy and he told me that i have 15 days to return it and still get a full refund. I was thinking of just buying it and try to activate it and see if it works and if it doesn't then just take it back. I also thought of ebay, but sometimes i just don't know if am getting what am being told am getting (so am kind of afraid of getting ripped off).
furthermore, my farther-in-law only needs the phone to make and receive calls and nothing so fancy.
What do you guys think?
Thanks, In Advance Again...

eddy4347: go ahead and try it.i know it still is working in ohio area. just got the pn215 ppd and put it on my dayghters line. i hat vzw reps that say things that are not true. i do know you cant get prepaid at corp store with out having it activated on prepay before you leave. but as long as you dont have it activated on prepay than phone is free to do esn change on. go ahead and try it. if it doesnt work then you can still return phone to walmart.as long as phone isnt activated on prepay,it is the same as if you bought phone on regular contract service. phone needs prgramed to work either way. so once on your dads acount by esn change and *228 programing. all will be good.

🤣 I love it, typical customer, Ask somebody who does something 40+ hours a week a question, then when they give you the answer you tell them they dont know what they are talking about. I forgot that customers always know what the policys are, what was I thinking, I figured that doing this for 7 years day in and day out that I would hafve learned somehting by now, stupid me. 🙄
...
you would think so wouldnt you. hmmmm very strange but not at all all surprising hahaha
...
I know, it just pisses me off, a customer ask a question to somebody who does something every single day, then tells them they dont know what they are talking about.
Crazyeagle summed it up perfectly in this thread...

well maybe reps should tell customers the right thing for answers to questions. but when you can go to 3 different stores and get 3 different answers on same thing. then why do you think a customer should just beleive a sales rep. i only told poster that it still can be done for esn on prepaid phones to postpay as long as phone hasnt been activated as prepay.and it still is possible.so until an actual customer comes on here and says they couldnt do it. then i wont beleive any reps on most things. i have had fun over last month getting some idiots fired for stuppid crap. but then they should have been doing their jobs and not lieing to customers.1 was a customer service rep on phone who told me one thing on phone line i just upgraded. got pho...

wfine81: what is company policy on ne2. old version and new version on expiration, to use by date.
...
What is this? 1st grade?
The old policy was $100 credit on all $34.99 plans and higher, the customer had 6 months after they were eligable to use it or it would technically expire, however very few customer care reps actually denied the customer their new every two based on the length they had been eligable for it.
The new police states that peoples "discount" varies based on the plan they are on, if they are on a lower teired plan then they only get $50 if they are on a higher plan they receive the $100, they must be on a higher plan (7.99 and up) for the 3 months prior to using their ne2 $100 discount, also the "expiration" is gone away now too, customers NE2 do not expire anymore after 6 months of not using it (if you were inrolled ...

sorry, typo $79.99 and up plans, not 7.99,
and not supposed to be inrolled, enrolled
...
thank you, you are an informed rep.but there is a lot that just dont know what they are doing. have been told by 3 reps that there is an expiration of 6 months on old and new version of ne2. 1 was from executives services. but thanks for the correct info.
...
technically as a rep a prepaid is to never be put on postpay period, policy wide that is what we are told regardless of being ABLE to work around this or not. So when you ask a rep, even if it maybe possible, they are going to tell you what they are supposed to and follow policy. If you come in my store and ask me if you can do this I will say NO, and end it there, why? Not because I am not informed but because I am not going to get in trouble over one customer and helping them do something shady that is against policy. The Gin applications, mobile web, are set up differently in these models, that is why Verizon has the policy never to put them on post pay and that is the policy I follow.
...
Hey man, sorry for getting ticked earlier, its just one of my pet peeves when somebody questions what I tell them about cell phones, I realize 80% of cell phone reps are probably morons and that they are not informed about policies, however dont think that if somebody tells you something that is not true that they are delibertly lying to you, that may be just telling you what they honestly think to be true.
...
at least verizon has some one like you that knows what they are talking about. if had more like you then customers wouldnt be getting misinformed info and getting pissed at vzw. just think of how many customers verizon could have if they were informed correctly. and told all their friends and family.but more often its bad about vzw that gets said and gets passed around in conversations. but for know im staying with vzw with a 5 lines. still has the best service of all the carriers. cingular cant even touch them in my area.
...
Hey bro, if you have a question about a plan or phone Ill be happy to help you out.
...
There is a saying that 1 happy customer will tell 2 people how great the service was, 1 upset customer will tell 20 people how terrible it was.
...
If the father in law still has the v60, pretty good chance he is out of contract. Give him a verizon gift card and tell him to apply it to a new phone of his choosing, he can resign a contract, year if he chooses to do so, and be done with it and get the phone he wants. And if he does not want to get a new phone, well, he is still not out the gift card, he can just apply it to his bills, either way, he can use the card to his liking.
...
I have seen customer activate Prepaid phone on a postpaid account but like others are saying VZW is closing that door. The problem is that Prepaid phones bill differently for other features, like TXT, PIX, Mobile Web, etc... so those features do not work. You phone would not be covered by Insurance as they do not have Prepaid phones.
...
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies. How about i will go an get the phone today after work (at 5 pm) and just activate it on my account and see if that works. And if it doesn't work or does work I'll let you guys know. If the phone works I will just buy a box to wrap it up and make it look nice.
If it doesn't i will just got back to walmart and tell them it just didn't work for me. Is it a good idea or what?
Thanks
...
Cant hur't to try, just be aware of the problems that MAY arrise.
...
The Best Idea was mentioned earlier to just buy a gift card and give it to him and let him upgrade and use that towards a phone, but if you are set on this prepaid thing then good luck.
...
Yes, you can use a prepaid phone on a postpaid acct... may I add I am in the west area. I justed pulled up an acct, and made several esn changes with prepaid phones at my desk. No problem.
Yes, certain models/esns are for prepaid only, but 90% of the prepaid phones can go on postpaid.
Verizon just doesn't want you to go buy the phone cheaper, as the same phone usually sells for more on postpaid , then prepaid.
Heck you can find cheap Nokia bar phones for $40/$50 at prepaid prices, same phone would be $130-$170 retail.

I had somebody I was buying 2128i prepaids and putting them on contracts, worked like a charm, then about a month ago it started blocking them when I was attempting to activate them, FYI I am in the south east area using eRoes.
(same thing was happening with the PN-215's too)

Hey Guys,
Well I have your answer for activating a pre-paid phone? This is what happen, I went and bought the phone at walmart on friday (VX5200 model) went home and got online and logged into my account and inserted the HEX # and also try the ESN # to activate the phone. After inserting the HEX # and also trying the ESN # I clicked on submit. It started processing it and the message I got was "unable to activate your new device, please call customer service at the number below".
I did this several times on my line and my wife's line and still did not work. I even did this, this morning and stil did not work. I went ahead an call customer service and ask them if i could activate this phone on my line cause the online activation ...
