Cost of Plans w\o Phone

My apologies. I suspect this subject has been covered here many times but please indulge me and let me vent.
I have an LG VX4400 phone that I got from Verizon 3 years ago. I terminated the contract shortly thereafter. The phone has sat in the bureau since then. It is in great shape; it has good reviews here; and frankly, cameras and all that other stuff are just unnecessary devices created to steer the consumer away from all that matters: the scope, breath, and quality of the phone service. There, I said it.
Here's my question. Clearly, "free" or moderately priced phones with two year activations aren't free at all. About $8 to $10 a month of the $40 America's Plan is the amortized cost of the phone itself, right ?

There is no difference in the price of the calling plans if you are using your own equipment or getting one at a contract price. You are however only required to take a 1 year agreement.

IF you do use your old 4400, and since you have to sign at least a 1 year contract, get a new phone at the promo price and sell it on ebay, you probably could make money on doing that. But, do not sign a year contract and not get a new phone. you might as well take advantage of the situation they put you in.

Yeah, it's like when your contract expires and you don't renew, but continue service. You don't start getting a discount because your phone is "paid in full".

it would require a one year agreement but you can get a new phone at anytime at the discount pricing. there are cost for setting up a new account. this is a business they wont do things that will cost them money
