Best plan for calling Canada (frequently)?

Hi, hopefully someone can help me and this message doesn't start yet another flame war...

Is the Verizon North American plan my best choice ($59.99/month for 400 anytime minutes, 1000 night and weekend minutes) or is there something better out there cost wise?

On a monthly basis, I make ~400 minutes of long distance phone calls to Canada and maybe 5 minutes of long distance calls within the U.S.. I probably will receive ~80 minutes of long distance phone call from Canada and another 5 minutes or so of calls from within the U.S.. The vast majority of these phone calls will happen at night or on weekends. I think I can get away with 400 anytime minutes for the remainder of my phone calls. If it matters at all, I live in Louisiana.

I've heard from some Verizon reps that I might be able to get the America's choice plan and tack on the Unlimited Canada option to get "free" long distance to Canada (assuming I don't go beyond my minute limits). However, when I tried getting this through a Radio Shack they were told by a Verizon rep that I couldn't (2 days after I phoned Verizon directly during July). Does anyone know if this option exists?

If you work for another wireless company, does your company have a plan that would be a better option?
Thanks for your help

That option you were referring to for the America's choice is not an option. The N. America's choice would be the most cost effective.

Another option is to get a calling card that has a low Canada rate. If your on the America's choice price plan domestic long distance is included--so the call to the card is free(airtime minutes might apply).

Actually, airtime minutes WILL apply.

Well then it would count against your N&W, but I'd dare ya to go over "Unlimited". Go ahead, try.

It's a part of the CCD to state that it costs $.45/min if they go over their Unlimited N&Ws. I like telling customer's that; "Now if you go over your unlmted n&w promo it will cost $.45/min."

The option of using America's choice along with a calling card looks like a decent option (long distance rates as low as $0.012/minute). Do you have any experience with using the phone cards with cell phones? Specifically do they charge you extra when you are making your phone call from a cell phone? I'm not so worried about calling a cell phone in Canada as everyone I would be calling is generally available on a land line.

Most of my calls out would probably happen on the weekend or at night so I'm not worried on the minutes as they'd be unlimited then.
Thanks for your help.

No extra charge for using a card from a cell phone. Make sure you read all the fine print on the calling card; there's a lot of little card companies will/might charge for. For example-- a connection fee, maintenance fee, how minutes are used(5 second increments), things like that

if AT&T Wireless offers good service/coverage in your area they have their $39.99 rate plans which you can add on Canada for $10 more per month. Basically you'd save $120 per year going that route and gain more minutes.

You're main concern is merely the long distance you'll accrue for outgoing calls to Canada. Incoming calls will never charge you long distance, domestic or international.

If AT&T Wireless service isn't good in your area, stick to VZW.
