GSM vs. CDMA

Would someone please explain the difference between CDMA and GSM..the pros and cons and what not?

It seems that the whole world is on GSM and Verizon is limiting itself by not moving to that standard, so I'm trying to understand the differences.

It also seems that many of the manufacturers are creating feature laden, well designed GSM phones primarily, with CDMA phones being 2nd priority.

I am interested to hear people's opinions.
Thanks 🙂

Read the post T-Moble Pulling Ahead post. It's more than coverage and what format the company uses.

GSM is a world format and is all digital.

CDMA is another type of digital format but VZW (as does Cingular & AWS) also still use the Analog spectrum. Analog will be going away in a couple of years as the FCC will allow carriers to drop this more costly type of service to allow these carriers to expand their digital coverage.

Both GSM & CDMA carriers are migrating toward what is called 3G or third generation service, GSM carriers are using EDGE then will use WCDMA also known as UMTS.

CDMA carriers will also use WCDMA but in a different format (no they will not work with WCDMA that the GSM carriers are going to use)

Which is bette...

This website may be useful for some of us looking to find the best coverage in our area. People have posted their own experiences with different carriers and it can be organised by location.

Lets be clear here. Cingular uses Analog in their GAIT plans only.

It seems like the rest of the world uses a different metric system, in the rest of the world, distances are measured by kilometers, we do it by miles, the rest of the world uses kilos, we use pounds to weigh things, we are Americans, we have to be different.
Just because "the rest of the world" buys it, uses it, has it, eats it, drinks it, wears it, does not make it better, we took a different approach to wireless technology, and works (here [meaning U.S]) better than GSM for right now, and probably it'll always will

Well Scooter, if the rest of the world uses it, that means that the equipment (handsets, towers, switches, etc.) are more plentiful and therefore cheaper! Did you sleep during Economics 101?

Well NoItAll! since you seem to know everything! can you tell me then, why is it that GSM cost so much more that CDMA to maintain/repair and of course upgrade...?
It should'nt, since it so "plentiful".

The web site you got is very useful, but the ultimate decision as to which system is better will be decided by the economics of the market place over time.
