help deciding on new phone

I'm a Verizon customer, and due for my new every two deal. My old phone, a Nokia 6256i is in good shape, and I might not consider replacing it were it not for the side buttons. I've probably taped several dozen events of the change jingling in my pockets.

I was considersing a Motorola Q, I want to be able to do three things with the new phone:
1. Make and receive calls
2. Keep my calendar updated
3. Keep track of my mileage/expenses

The Verizon sales rep told me that I would have to have a data plan and that not having one would cost me money, because it constantly updates itself. I don't want to mess with my plan. Is there a way to use the features and memory of the phone, but not hae a data plan?

I had the Q and now have the 700p. In my opinion the 700p is a far,far better pda. If you don't have to have windows software the 700p is a better phone overall. It's easy to navigate through the palm software, my reception and battery life is superb. I wouldn't trade mine for any other phone out there.
