In this case based upon the limited info provided the residents did not have detail on the way it could specifically benefit them. Was the proposed tower going to be a shared installation? How many residents used Verizon? Where were the dead spots that this would have improved?
If there is a lack of trust then even solid science showing safety will not be accepted, particularly when there is no impartial presentor.
Plain and simple people are idiots and do not think things through. I bet when they have to rip down that church because it has no money you will see people crying in the streets. I hope that they remember how they cost the church a chance to make a nice amount of money for basically doing nothing.

I assume you do not believe these two items are of legitimate concern so the net result is that you might very well approve the tower.
Each of us operates in what we perceive to be our best interest. If residence believe the above two items to be true than it makes perfect sense to appose a tower. There may be alternatives to this location that would address the coverage requirements.
If the items are not true but believed to be true than information needs to be shared in a manner that can convince the concerned individuals.
