As a professional mediator and facilitator I deal with these very issues. I am also currently working with key stakeholders regarding HDTV towers in jefferson County, CO which are many times more controversion (lawsuits flying left and right).

I rember watching C-Span once were SPrint PCS wanted to use a small plot of land to put up a tower on this Highschool's property. The school was looking highly forward for it because it really could have used the extra income it would have generated... The surounding residence shot it down though. Its to bad for sprint too because I used to sell sprint in that area and they desprately needed the coverage there.

In this case based upon the limited info provided the residents did not have detail on the way it could specifically benefit them. Was the proposed tower going to be a shared installation? How many residents used Verizon? Where were the dead spots that this would have improved?
If there is a lack of trust then even solid science showing safety will not be accepted, particularly when there is no impartial presentor.

The same people who complain about cell towers being built are the same people who complain about poor service. Well guess what you cannot have it both ways. I would let any cell phone company build a tower on the roof of my house if they wanted. Think of the service I would get, the rent I could charge would cover my mortgage.
Plain and simple people are idiots and do not think things through. I bet when they have to rip down that church because it has no money you will see people crying in the streets. I hope that they remember how they cost the church a chance to make a nice amount of money for basically doing nothing.

I doubt that you would approve a cell tower on your building if you truly believed that it would
1. lower your property value and/or
2. negatively effect your health
I assume you do not believe these two items are of legitimate concern so the net result is that you might very well approve the tower.
Each of us operates in what we perceive to be our best interest. If residence believe the above two items to be true than it makes perfect sense to appose a tower. There may be alternatives to this location that would address the coverage requirements.
If the items are not true but believed to be true than information needs to be shared in a manner that can convince the concerned individuals.
