Java on smartphones?

Friend of mine wants to get Verizon 1x service and be able to go into a yahoo chatroom (which is java-enabled)...

Would any of the smartphone devices work for this? Mainly, the i700 and the Treo 600 are in concern, but others would work too. I also asked this question in the i700 and the Treo 600 forums.

Thanks in advance.

Possibly. The phone will need a Java engine in order to run the Java code. Most phones do not, due to the memory capacity needed to run the Java virtual environment. Smart phones might.
