I just discovered a Verizon Rip-off!

I have the Motorola V-325 which is overall a good phone (but not the problem). It comes from Verizon with the Get It Now feature. I don't download games or anything from Verizon so that feature is blocked. However, I do use the phone to make voice recordings as a memo device. Well, I have been plagued for months with 1 minute data charges to my bill that I thought I had not made. After many long phone calls to Verizon I have finally discovered that the simple act of making a voice recording on my phone utilizes the GIN feature and even though GIN is blocked, it still makes the charge. This is a "feature" of GIN that can't be changed! The nice tech guy at Verizon sent me this extract:

"The new GIN Block feature will allow VZW to block the ...

Getting into the GIN menu to access the record function is starting a data call.. you can hold down the speakerphone button to bypass this...

I tried as you said but holding in the speakerphone button disables all other key functions while the button is held in. Is that what you mean?

Yeah, the voice dial button is how I always make a voice memo (hold for about a second or two). Even thought it doesn't go through all the GIN menu items, it still accesses GIN. And of course, to listen to a voice memo, you have to go through the the GIN menu so you're stuck either way.

My only alternative, I think, is to find a phone that that has voice memo but is not GIN capable. Or stop using my phone to make voice memos!

Not sure how that accesses GIN, you can take a 325 that is not activated at all, and do a voice memo, I just tried. Thats a weird problem that your having

No, Backup Assistant isn't installed. But here's the latest weirdness: I just went to a Verizon Service Center and the Tech guy checked out a few things on my phone and account. Then he said I was having this problem because "National Access" was blocked or disabled on my account!?! He was a real nice guy and seemed to know what he was doing, but, in fact, he really couldn't even explain what National Access was. At any rate he enabled it and said that will take care of it. I hope so, but I'm not counting on it. What is "National Access" anyway?

Dial up internet access using your phone when it's connected to a laptop.

nooooo... national access is th eunderlying code to allow the GIN data to move freely through the network without whacking you per kilobyte... You're thinking of BroadBandAccess... Close, but no stogie...

So is it reasonable to assume that the Tech guy from VZ is right, and that is what was causing my problem about getting charged for each use of my voice recording?

National Access is also the ability to use your phone as a modem with the 1xrtt phones. I used my V710 as a modem all the time with the 1x NATIONAL ACCESS network. This replaced the slower quick to net. But yes, the higher (but not EVDO quick) speeds allows for GIN applications. Why would a phone feature that has nothing to do with GIN be charging airtime is beyond me. Voice recorder will work even if the phone has zero service and zero signal.

Ok you guys are ridiculous. I'm sure it's not verizon's intent to rip off their customers. just because you can't afford it doesn't meant it's a rip off. secondly if you're worried about 1 minute here and there for your phone connecting a data call then i would return the phone. if you have the GIN function blocked the only time you would be incurred AIRTIME is if you tried to connect to the network which mean you went into the GIN menu and clicked on GET APPS! the phone will then try to connect and realize you are not authorized to download any applications but you will still be billed that one minute for the 10 seconds it took for your phone to verify that. Your voice memo problem may be an unknown issue with that particular model of phone...
