Some number crunching for Phonepimp....

Just because you love to toss numbers around. You stated that load balance isn't that big of a difference between VZW and Cingular is, well let's look at it then.

I look at customer bills all day long, so I can safely say that the average call on a cell phone is around 1 minute, but let's put it at 2 minutes per call just to be safe.

24 hours * 30 minutes = 720 2 minute time blocks per day.

GSM = 8 calls per channel * 720 time blocks = 5760 calls per day handled per cell.

CDMA = 10 calls per channel * 720 time blocks = 7200 calls per day handled per cell.

Ok, let's say there is 1 cell per tower.....

Cingular = 21,800 towers * 5760 calls per day = 125,568,000 calls per day.

VZW = 20,500 towers * 7200 calls per day = 147,6...

Of course, those figures do assume that all cells are at full capacity at all times, which would rarely be the case. It also assumes that there is only one cell per site.

Without knowing how many cells are at each site, it is really pointless to discuss. Also, you fail to figure in that VZW has some 15 million more customers using their network, so they will be using more slots at any given time than Cingular will. With only a 20% difference in availability at any cell site, this increases the possibility that VZW will encounter a full cell site, doe it not?

I believe my point was to point out that you saying load capacity isn't that big of a deal between the technologies was incorrect.

Also, you fail to remember that the VZW tower total is EOY 2003. We have since added 8 months worth of towers, and added the towers from Qwest to our network so the totals are inherantly off in your favor as is.

It does increase the possibility of a full site on paper yes, but knowing how our real life test men and women are checking our network monthly I feel safe in saying it doesn't happen very often, and if it does it is remidied fast.

Dakz...

As stated, BOTH figures are YE 2003.

I don't need your famous "test guys" to tell me you are having degradation, I hear it every day from customers, and in the trades.

And what do you hear about your service pertaining to degradation?

Not much, considering we have adequate sites in most areas. Cingular is very strong in New England. I deal with a lot of business travelers where I am, and most travel between Boston and New York. This is the group that complains the loudest about VZW's signal dropping off.

I don't know much about the signals in those areas, but keep this in mind. If they are coming to you they have already made up their minds on something being wrong no matter if there really is or isn't. Also take into account that VZW has the lowest churn rate in the business as well as the most customers and that speaks volumes in my book. It tells me that we may have more people to complain but on a per cust basis you have more problems than we do, because they are leaving you faster than they are leaving us.

Also, last I looked, Cingular this past quarter had the second highest churn rate at 2.7% of your customer base leaving, second only to AT&T at 3.4%.
