The death of Nokia on CDMA...

I had a little chat with my friend, the Nokia Rep, this morning on the phone. He tells me the three most recent Noks on the Verizon service will be the last ones effectively that will be made for Nokia BY Nokia. Any other Nokias that show up on the service will actually be built by someone else...Pantech, for example. I, for one, am very disappointed that Nokia can build a superior phone for GSM services, but because of legal manoeverings, the same cannot be accomplished for CDMA. For the user who is not as savvy as most of us who frequent phonescoop.com, this is not necessarily a plus. I throw this open to any and all of you. Feedback, please.

Happy Columbus Day!

Isn't it b/c Qualcomm tried to hike up the price for chips for Nokia since they are the largest handset maker. Leave it to Qualcomm who's past of anti-competitive behavior has been well documented. But on another note, they never released anything worth purchasing for CDMA anyways, so it shouldn't be that bad. Its not like VZ is going to allow for any Symbian phones.

Actually Nokia used their own CDMA chipsets. VZW has some deal now with Qualcomm that everyone has to use their chipset. Nokia's chipset outpeformed the qualcomms for signal. That is why I still carried the Nokia 6015 because it was a phone that would get reception in areas that no other phone would.

But this is old news BTW. Nokia 6215/6305/6315 are all made by pantech and rebranded. Oddly enough though, I had a customer last week that tried 6 phones at her house and the only two that would get reception were the Motorola v325 and the Nokia 6315. Don't know why...but true.

Qualcomm, from what I understand, is the only maker of the CDMA chips. Nokia is in a court battle with Qualcom, and I hope that they get them for monopoly laws, because Qualcom is a monopoly. They lost the court battle in Germany, but there's still one going on here in the states. Nokia has been the one phone company that I can consistantly say gets the best signal reception.
