Monthly Plan
I'm going to be a student in upstate NY soon and need cell phone coverage. I'd like to wait a couple of months for a new phone to come out, so in the meantime I need cell service.
I have a CDMA samsung phone that would work on Verizon's network and need to know if I can purchase a monthly or "pay as you go" contract and use my phone on it.
Thanks for your help.

You can do either one you want. If you do a contract you could swing a 1 year contract, but you would have a $35 activation fee, but no more $ for a phone since u have one. If you do a two year there is a $15 activation fee. Unlike Cingular and Sprint that have $35 or $36 activation fee on 1 or 2 year contracts. If...

So can I just walk into a Verizon store in Syracuse or Ithaca with my old phone, get a pay as you go phone number for Ithaca? Then how do I add more money to the phone number?
And say I decide to switch carriers I can take my phone number with me right?
Thanks for your help.

Yes you can, but as along as your phone works correctly and it also might have to have GPS on it. (global Positioning System) FCC is starting to crunch down making it mandatory on phones. You just buy "pay as you go" cards. ($15,$30,$50, etc.)
As far as keeping your number with prepaid, and switching providers, I don't thi...

Yes you can port pre-paid numbers, all numbers have to be portable unless the company has a waiver to allow them out... thats a very small list of who gots waivers and a Company our size sure don't get one of those things.
as for choosing your prefix, to a limit, certain ones are reserved for Pre-paid and others reserved for post paid. I dont' know which are which for your area because I work in CA 😛
There is a trick to saving your number if you wish to move from pre to post paid in verizon but its ALOT of work. You start a service with some other company, port your number to them, then port it back to one of our post paid lines during the other company's trial period... I know it is a stupid way to do it but at this time there is no way to change pre paid to post paid with us.

No GPS isn't required to have service, the FCC mandates it on any newly manufactured phones but not to have service.

To have phones activated, GPS is supposed to be on 100% of phones being activated, per FCC. There is a database that has to approve a phone brought in by a customer. If it does not approve the ESN provided by the customer, it will be blocked completely. You might want to check that out. This was recently sent out.
The following are scenerios of how E911 / GPS compliant and non-E911 / non-GPS compliant handsets may be used by customers according to the federal mandate:
Scenerio Description
Use Handset
1
Customer walks into store, selects non-GPS compliant handset, and wants to sign up with new line of service. (eRoes will give a pop up message to store personel.) No
2
Customer walks into store with own non-E911/non-GPS handset and wants to sign up with new line of service. Yes
3
Customer calls Telesales and wants to sign up with new line of service, owns a non-E911/non-GPS compliant handset. Yes
4
Exisiting customer owns a non-E911/non-GPS compliant handset and wants to process an ESN change on current MTN. (...

I couldn't' find the information that you are referring to. Are you in the West area and under what E-mail header was it sent out under so I can do a search. I referenced with 3 other reps here and a sup and the closest thing we came up with is about the global phones need to be activated through a specific route now, we no longer do those, but this is no where near what the customer wants. Hear in telesales we do service only on customer provided equipment all the time with and with out having GPS. Also Non-GPS phones will still show up in the equipment database when you run them through.
I am in the midwest and we got an email that was embedded in infocenter on our E*ROES activation syst...

I looked on the Samsung website and they have no phone at all that is a samsung sph-t100. You might want to take off the battery and look again.
The closest ones are the SCH-n300 or the SPH-i700. Go to http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/produc t/b2c_product_subtype.jsp?eUser=&prod_path=%2 fPhones+and+Fax+Machines%2fWireless+Phones%2f Verizon

If it's that old you might not want to use it. What service was it on before? Where did you get it?

it works now, its on Bell Mobility here in Toronto, I only need to use it for a bit until i get a new phone
Toronto Canada?

Again where was the phone bought? If in canada you might not be able to use it in the states. And if the phone is that old you should just consider going online and purchasing one of the phones on the Verizon Wireless website for prepaid. Great deals. And you will have GPS for emergencies.
again, i only need this as a temporary thing, until I figure out which phone I want to get, I don't want to buy a cheaper phone before i decide on which one to spend my money on
goleafs86 said:
why not? US carriers had the same phone back when I bought it

Where did you buy the phone? I keep asking you that....need an answer. If it is in Canada your out of luck I believe.
You may not get someone who wants to try to activate it though, it will be... difficult. the Russian phone I had to spend about 45 minutes searching for programing instructions on the internet and finally found a page in Russian that I had to run through babble fish to translate to English 😛

Why should he go with a company that sold itself to another carrier? Verizon wireless has better customer service and a LARGER network anyway.

Damn you have become a prince, you having beat the king frog yet, but you are close.

did you get my email wynnefox?

I don't think the phone will work.. but hey, you might get a surprise. I once did an activation on a Russian import and it worked as well I have done one on one of those Korean 10th anaveristy edition startacs.

Damn.
Now THATS customer service. Show me ANYONE that would go that extra mile for a customer. This is the basis on VZW's customer service. I just wish that VZW would get back to these standards.
I got confused on what he was talking about so after my shift I went to his house (he lived near the store) looked things over, had him return most of the stuff he got, wired things up and headed home. The guy a couple months later just showed up out...

oh, okay, so i just walk in, and how long would it take? would i get to choose which prefix number i wanted?
You might get to choose from a few prefixes, but not make your own up, depends on the market how many prefixes will come up for Ithaca.
so whats with this GPS thing? can i or can't I use my phone on a prepaid Verizon plan?
goleafs86 said:

GPS = GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM
Means if you dial 911 they can pinpoint your location via GPS better. Instead of you saying I'm buy the brown spotted cow, next to the barn and a creek on the corner of blah blah.
my phone is a samsung sph-t100
from what it looks like, I can phone anyone in the US in the digital coverage area and not pay long distance charges, is that right?
so other carriers national plans are the same thing, cause this other guy is trying to tell me no
thanks
WynneFox said:
This is correct. Pay as you go is national.
His phone may not be tri-mode though. If it isn't it won't be able to be used nationwide. But it can be activated on the nationwide network as long as the evil GPS worm doesn't get em lol.
goleafs86 said:
its a tri-mode
Welp I believe you could give it a try. But I would be prepared with some method of payment for a newer prepaid phone if it doesn't go through our system. Good luck to ya!
Iyvonne said:
I thought that only two phone could be used on our post paid plans, on the web site you can only purchase a lg3200 and a Kiyocera 414 so i assumed only those two phones are useable?
If you mean the "pay as you go plan" no. Other phones are definitely fine to use. You could use the Nokia 2285 if you wanted. (Cheap phone) You just pay more money for the phone you want if you want a LG 7000 for instance on a PREPAID plan. The cost of the phone is more, when more features are present on the phone. (Color screen, Speaker phone, Video, etc..
For instance:
Nokia 2285 is about $100 + to buy it on prepaid.
Nokia 2285 is $1 or free in most stores on a 2 year contract.
So thank you for the information 😎
