Is there a website to go to that list what air cards are compatiable with what laptops, I have noticed that more and more computers are coming in with a different (smaller) type of slot for cards and the ones I carry dont fit, sorry about the question but I am not super compuer literate

novatel 640 express card. You can also order a converter so the smaller express card can fit in the older larger slots

Just checked on that novetel card but I dont think it will fit what I am talking about, what I am taking about is the samewidth as the old cards, but it is not as long and one side is shorter then the other

I just schetched out a very rough picture of what I am talking about, its about 3-4 inches long and a little shorter on the other side.

There are only two types of crads, the larger ones and the express cards. That Novatel card he was talking about is the right card.

I do not know of this list. But an easy way to look at it is this. There are two slots. A PC Type II or PC Express. They both are similar in size except for the depth. The Express is much shallower. The only card that will work in the Express at this time is the 640 by Novatel. Most other cards are Type II. I only carry the Novatel and the KPC650. Both are a good cost to purchase. The KPC650 has a jack to use an external antenna. Plus the other card that is close in cost is the Audiovox and it doesn't have an antenna. I have compared both and always...always get a higher data transfer rate with the KPC650. The new HP's and Dell's have the PC Express slot. The only real way I can tell is I (with the laptop off) push a Type II car...

PC Express. My HP has that. They put a remote control into the slot. I don't use an aircard, but if I did the 640 would fit perfect.

Just like to remind people is that the USB device is coming soon so that can be another interface in which customers can chose other than Express Cards and the extinct type 2 slots.

no prob. I ran into this a couple months ago when I had a business bring in their new dell and the KPC650 wouldn't fit. I went to order the 640 and they were available through Telesales and Online and B2B direct reps ONLY. I was screwed out of a sale. The issue was addressed and two weeks later we had the ability to purchase the 640 card. So, I learned the hard way. Lessons that cost money are always the lessons you will always remember! LOL

Sorry to clarify, but the comparison was between the Audiovox PC5740 and the KPC650... I haven't had a chance to compare with the Novatel. I have one, but haven't sold it yet...usually after I sell the customer will allow me to test the bandwidth on pcpitstop to see.

Obviously you know more then I do so lemme ask you this. How do you use the bluetooth or data cable from say an 8300 or 990 to connect to the internet on your laptop? They just now brought vcast to my area and I have never paid attention to the discussions about "tethering" since it never really intrested me until now.

The pic you drew is of an express card/54. I am pretty computer illiterate, but I know my laptop has one. Just don't have any use for it, unless I can find a firewire port that fits.

I do not think there is a website, but just remember there are Express Cards and Pc-cards type 2 slots. Type 2 slots are becoming extinct because OEMs are discontinuing them and thus it is best to get Express Cards obviously, if you have that right slot.

Which laptop do you have?

Hahah. The pc frequencies are messing with your brain already? Come on!!!

Inspiron? Good. Which one?

If it is the E1505 it uses an express slot (54), which I think you can use the V620.

(Not 100% sure. I know that Dell actually offered a device to use with the laptop.)

The cost difference between the add on option and the card from VZW is only about 10 bucks. So you aren't really out much. Of course with it built in you don't have something sticking out of the laptop...but IMO that is no big deal.

When I got it I got the Wi-Fi built in because at my house I have a router upstairs where the PC is that way I can use my laptop whereverI am in my home. I was just looking for someway to connect to EVDO when I take my laptop to work or I am out in the feild doing a presentation for potential customers. I really dont want a recurring fee becasue I might only use it for an hour or so a month.

Very true.

Hey Jerry!!

Be really careful about getting an aircard for that Dell. I have seen a majority of Dell's even with the new slot that won't accept the card. Hardware issue with Dell. It will work with everyone else.

Good Luck!

As far as your transferring issue. I am not sure if you can use bluetooth with the 990 or 8300 for internet access. The cable works just fine. However, the customer has to have the minimum data plan (24.99) to make it actually work. Having the vcast network should make it work really fast.

I am not sure why that is. I know with the PC5740 that we have it will not work with 99% of the Dells that are older. The newer ones seem to be ok.

The laptops just won't recognize the card.

...
crazyeaglefan236

Same speed as the aircard. Whatever would be would be. Try it, you get one month free. (at least that is the promo in our market)

Hey Jerry,

The mobile office kit connects at the fastest speed available through the phone, so you should be on the EV-DO/Broadband.

You would have to add a data package to connect and see how fast it is.

Oct 31, 2006, 2:48 PM
I have the 8300 and I have to use the kit combined with a plan. But, like I said, in our market you get one month free. And it is a feature code, thus meaning it is not tied to a contract. So you can try it and then remove it if you don't like the speed and/or price. If you like it, you can take the feature off and get the appropriate aircard. I usually will let a customer try out the feature on their phone (if they have a tetherable phone) with giving them an office kit. If they keep the feature for six months (chargeback window) then they owe nothing for the kit. Or they can return the kit and I will get the the KPC650 or the Novatel 640 with adding the plan. Every time they have returned the kit and got the card. But at least they...
