HELP! - How well do standard VZW Fones work in the UK?

Hi. I'll be travelling to the UK this November for a holiday, and I was hoping to bring my VZW fone with me. I currently have an Audiovox 8900, but I'm planning on getting the new Treo 600 before I go.

I was wondering if any of you have had any experiences with trying to use their standard VZW fone out there. Yes, I know all the technical stuff. I know the UK is on GSM and VZW is CDMA. Heck! I was even considering switching to AT&T over this issue and getting the Treo with AT&T!

However, this past weekend I was told by a VZW Rep over the phone that my VZW fone should work out there in the UK! Hmmm... So I went into the VZW store today to check out the Treo, and I asked the rep if my fone would work out there. He said no, and told me about the International program that I read all about on their website where you rent a GSM fone. But he also said that my fone might work out there, but there's no guarantees, and that it may be sketchy service.

So I was wondering if any of you have had any experiences with it and if so, please share them. I'd greatly appreciate it, since so many decisions hang on this one factor.

I'm sure this has been brought up many times before and I'm sorry. I just want some quick answers, is all! 🙄

To my knowledge, there is no CDMA service in the U.K. Although I was in London only, I can tell you that my Verizon phone did not work there.

Through the B2B channel only - don't bother going into a store, they aren't allowed to sell it yet. It's also expensive as sin and not as satisfying.

Basically, whoever told you your phone would work as-is in jolly olde England was off his or her nut. It's not gonna work.

Though this afternoon they DID tell us that you can now roam in Canada, Mexico & South Korea (with a special PRL). The usual limitations apply - have to be on a CDMA network, 69 cents per minute PLUS whatever charges the carrier decides to smack you with. It won't be pretty, but it'll work.

Try calling 18007118300. Rent-a-phone can help you out, but be prepared to provide a $300 deposit on a credit card.

Heh heh, forgot to add that you can now roam in Bermuda (don't forget your Schwartz...) the Dominican Republic (bring me back a baseball player) Israel (DO try to not get blown up) and Venezuela (nothing there but rioters, Hugo Chavez, and oil. Oh, and coffee).

I also heard from another tech this morning that the Moto Worldphone may not come out at all due to software & production issues, what a surprise.
