VZW vs. Cingular

Cingular has more customers then VZ yet their revenue isn't as high.

VZ is adding more customers then any other carrier, and their customers are spending more money while holding down their churn.

Whats wrong with Cingular? They offer early nights, they claim to have "fewest dropped calls" more coverage (worldwide because of GSM), and they have more customers then their competitors?

What are they doing wrong that VZ is doing so right?

Isn't GSM less expensive to operate and maintain then CDMA?

Let's take a snapshot of recent numbers and compare. 3Q 2006:

Customers:
Cingular - 58.7M
Verizon - 56.7M

Net Additions:
Cingular - 1.4M
Verizon - 1.9M

Revenue:
Cingular - 8.7B
Verizon - 23.3B

ARPU:

Just my opinion, by years end VZW number of customers will pass Cingular.. Cingular's numbers are high due to the merger of 2 large companies.. And "fewest dropped calls claim" I wouldn't bet on that, wonder if they have any numbers to back that claim? Would be interesting to see.. VZW churn rate has remained the lowest for quite some time now, given Cingular's early nights, fewest dropped calls claim, one would think their numbers would be better.. 😉

My point exactly. You'd think that because of the cheaper cost of GSM, the early night and weekends, and the rollover that they offer, they would be doing much better then VZ; but they're not.

Plus their phones are over priced... I purchased the "Chocolate" for 149.99 after rebate, it offers like 64MB of internal memory and expandable with memory card, 1.3 mega pixel camera, EVDO, touch sensitive keys, with optional VZ navigator option... they are still pushing the RAZR for about the same price without all of those options. ☚ī¸

It isn't necessarily what Cingular is doing wrong. They are simply in 2 different stages of development as carriers.

Cingular just completed their major merger 2 years ago. They have large capital expenditures that need to be made to make them a complete carrier. They are ahead of schedule when compared to the initial plans a the time of the merger.

Verizon's merger was YEARS ago. They are more of an 'adult' carrier so to speak. They have their major capital expenditures behind them and can now reap the benefits of their work while keeping their network updated.

If you ask me, Cingular has done an amazing job holding on to the #1 spot this long.

Yeah I agree, Verizon's merger was in 1999, so Cingular is doing a very good job at holding on to their numbers.
