We have all heard about it, but it kicks off every day and it charges minutes. So it's not really free, is it?

There is an auto daily synch that may use a text message for each contact, or just one. Nobody is sure yet. You may be able to set the synch to do it during free time.

I am referring to this post at Howard Forums:

Updating the address book takes all of 10 seconds. You can change the pref. in the program to what time you want the backup to occur (change to offpeak times)...again it only takes a few secs of airtime, plus standard txt rates. So 2 additions to the address book when sync'd to phone, uses 2 txt mesgs. You can read all about it on the GetItNow website

So are you saying that the first upload would use 300 text messages if you had that many contacts, and then just one for each change you make after that?

Couple of nice features

1. You can edit you...

If you use autosync, it will send you one text message every day (at standard rates) to wake up the phone and prompt you to let the phone make contact with the backup assistant. And it will use minutes to do that actual backup. However, you can turn off the autosync and just back up on demand from the phone anytime. That way, no text message but still minute usage.

I just set it up yesterday. The autosync sounds like a nag if it works that way. I'll set it back, and thanks for the advice.

Maybe the autosynch will have a monthly synch option some day.

You have to turn off the autosync from a PC. When you're logged in, it's under the 'My Account.'

Thanks, I found it. Odd that you can set the scheduled time of day, but not turn it off from the phone.

So if you leave it on all year, you will have 365 text units applied.

Ok read it I guess this is what people are complaining about: "Automatic backup on a schedule you choose." I don't have to choose. When I make a change in my phones contact list it automatically backs it up without me seeing or doing anything.

Unless you turn off AutoSynch, you'll get 365 TXY messages per year. The phone gets a "Wake Up" message and checks for mods to the PB, then synchs if it has to. You don't see an actual message on your phone unless you look at the activity on the GIN app.

You can only turn off the AutoSynch online. You can't do it from the phone.

Yes, you can get charged for text messages, but it is not a daily charge. The TM charge only applies if the sync is initiated FROM THE COMPUTER. My account bears this out; I started using the feature almost immediately after it was introduced (Nov. 16?). On my bill from Dec 6 I did have 2 mysterious (until now) text messages, not 20+, which would be the case if it were a daily charge. And, as in the last paragraph, I could have avoided these charges ($.20) altogether had I turned AutoSync off and used Backup Now on the phone. Arguably the $.10/use is worth the hassle. This is the relevant paragraph (from https://www.getbackupnow.com/); see text in bold:

What is AutoSync?

Watch out if you use Mobile Phone Tools or another backup utility. They reset the archive bit on the phone and it messes up the VZ Backup.

You can only use one or the other. If you regularly synch your phone with your PC, you probably don't need the VZ Backup anyway.
