I think it would be a cool idea to add a BT messsaging system that you can use to chat with your friends in situations where you cannot talk. And you can have multiple connections, or connect to a port, and everyone connect to that BT device and chat with their phone. It would be great for lectures, or when you want to say stuff that you don't want others to hear...and before you bash it, think about how you already use IM and forums when you can just talk on the phone, like what all a cell phone is suppose to be in the first place.

I think you are correct. I also think that if this were to happen then you would have to pay for bluetooth service on your cell phone. They make money off of text messages so this would not be a wise choice on a carrier's part.

In wireless circles it's known as an ad hoc network. Among pda's and the like, you could probably find a program to take advantage of the wifi capabilities to do just that. On Verizon, with much of the bluetooth currently being locked out, I'm not sure what could be done. Even on other carriers, I'm not sure that is what they would want. Lost revenue and all that. Then again, there are all those IM apps out there.

It would be lost revenue, but I don't see it being too bad. The BT only has a range of 30 ft, so it would probably mostly be kids in the same class using it. Most of the people that I sms are much farther than 30 ft from me.

Exactly, and you could use a pre installed program for chatting with peers. And any other messages would be SMS or MMS, outside of the BT connection.
