enV and VZW pricing tactics (PCMag.com)

I thought this was a really good story and really opened my eyes as to the short-sighted and overly aggressive pricing tactcs VZW uses. I think that the BlackJack is looking better and better.

The new LG enV VX9900 is the best phone available for text-messaging addicts, but it could be so much more if it weren't for Verizon's shortsighted, avaricious, and consumer-unfriendly software choices. That leaves me oddly ambivalent about a phone that in many ways I like a lot.

The enV follows up on Verizon's LG VX9800, which introduced its unusual design. It looks like a standard candy-bar phone, but flip it open and it reveals a spacious QWERTY keyboard, big screen and ste

It tickled my funny bone when he said if you don't want to use the phone to its fullest then it wouldn't be that expensive...and with the prices you can't beat the Sidekick in a comparison, no matter how bad the phone may be.

Actually I sorta got pist at that because between all of my accounts I pay VZW over $300 a month. The saving grace really for me is that I have a rule setup that forwards all "High Priority" emails to my Gmail account. Fortunately GMail offers a pretty sweet WAP 2.0 interface for Gmail accounts.

I honestly wish now that Cingular had its act together here in Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe areas. I had the Samsung DT809 (its like the U740) and I constantly ran into ...

Yeah, that is the reason I have a blackberry and have a T-mobile MDA on order, the data is cheaper with T-Mobile, and I need that the most, with a ton of minutes, but I can't justify myself paying 300, not that its a bad thing, its just here in the Houston area, I can get it for cheaper with T-mobile. I wouldn't be able to function business wise or socially without my cell phone, it would be impossible.

you can download an alternative POP3/IMAP program, Vemail, for only $5 per month. But it won't show up on the enV's "email" tab, nor will it activate when you press the "email" button*you have to go hunting through menus for it.

Continuous talk time: 4 hours 44 minutes

One problem with the review, I set mine up for one touch shortcut key on both pop3 email account and mp3 player, I open the phone and hit one button for each item, so no it is not hard to get to

Yeah I think data pricing is the main issue that needs to be considered. I would switch back to Verizon if they had good rates on unlimited txt data and a good sizeable minute package.

Anything is better than 80 dollars for 450 minutes with a data plan, without out even getting into the text message plan.

Just seems so high when it doesn't need to be. I have a blackberry with T-Mobile, and I have 1000 minutes free nights and weekends, unlimited data add on, and unlimited Text for less than what I can get Verizon for 450 minutes with unlimited data, and 1000 or 500 text messages.

And in a non-scientific way, because I myself wouldn't begin to try and measure it, EDGE has been just as good to me as EVDO, so unless Verizon does something DRASTIC then I am going to stick with T-Mobile. But I would change in a heartbeat, because I had Verizon for 2 years.

your 1000 minutes does not include unlimited mobile to mobile.

depending on who you call, like if you had friends/family with verizon wireless, you could potentially get alot more then 550 minutes out of the unlimited in calling.

and yes verizon wireless's internet is more expensive then Tmobiles, why wouldnt it be? its better, faster, and in more areas then Tmobiles EDGE. When tmobile starts expanding their data coverage and adding 3g in alot of markets their data price will go up also.

Well, if the other carriers got their act together we could get some more competative pricing.

Say you sell a hamburger for $10 and the guy next door sold one for $5. Now, say for the last year more of his customers start coming to your restaurant very few of your customer base goes to his... and you outsell him in hamburgers and make a much bigger profit. Why in the world would you wanna change your business model?

Because the difference is something called an ETF, and you don't have a contract when you go eat hamburgers, and you can't look at something for a year, when most people at different carriers have a two year agreement, and compare it to a simplistic business model. Its Apples and Oranges, most people are not willing to pay an ETF fee, and will suck it up, because generally humans are too afraid to try new things, and conform.

Yeah... Verizon is purely kept customers with their ETF which is exactly why they were the first US Carrier to offer prorated ETFs.

You gotta come up with a different excuse as to why people prefer the VZW Hamburger which is more costly.

Why do people always say "Treo or Q"?

The i730 is so much better than them, it's laughable.

Plus, the Treo doesn't even work half the time because it has no Memory, and the Q is a smartphone, and who wants a smartphone?

They have been known to have some issues from time to time.

most of them dont freeze up and they dont freeze up every second. but some do freeze up thats true. there has been some software issues with the Q at launch but for the most part they have been kinked out. and if you get a bad one we can FRU it out 👿

Look at Sprint, they had to get the 700vx, and that's still having memory issues!

And the Q is still a smartphone. Look at that Pantec. That one doesn't even have QWERTY.

Who wants a smartphone? If you want PDA funtions, they are almost useless b/c of lack of QWERTY or Touchscreen.

its personal preference living, we can argue all day about what device is best for you but in the end the customer that buys the phone has to make that choice.

is a Treo PDA better then a Q smartphone? in many ways yes it is, if the touch screen and pda functions are very important to you then get a treo or a 6700. if not and you want something a little cheaper with alot of the same features then get a Q

why even argue about this? both are available.

Dec 7, 2006, 9:03 AM
Yeah, I have played with the Q and it sucks, the Treo has no memory, and when you use the phone you have to manually shut down the program in its memory.

I have never been able to look at a working i730 in a retail store but i hear they are great.

They really are.

If the i770 or i760 don't come to the states, I suggest getting an i730 from Verizon or an i830 from Sprint if you want a good PDA phone.

i have literally never sold one that didn't come back. The battery on it is worthless, it comes with a standard and an extended life in box and most go through both in a day. Between sketchy software that either freezes or erases all your data it isn't worth the plastic it's made from. The i730 hasn't been in retail for a while, and the i830 has to get fulfilled in most places.

the Q works just fine for most people unless you need to edit word/excel documents. It doesn't freeze anymore after you get the software upgrade which was released months ago. I stream TV onto it with no problems or freezing(you can do it in moderation and not get it canceled people!)

The treo is hit or miss, I personally don't like it much but know many pe...

Are you kidding about the i730? I've never heard of any problems with them like that...

My brother uses the i730 with his slingbox all the time, he's never been throttled. He's also gone through various i730s (usually his own fault, he shattered the screen recently), but, as I said, usually never the devices fault.

I can't stand the Q...
