Chapel Hill-Which carrier to choose for voice and data?

I'm moving to Carrboro-Chapel Hill. I want a phone with good coverage locally and nationwide as I will be traveling for work. My girlfriend and I will be joining the same carrier if we can get free calls between our two phones. Would a family plan also make sense?

I would also be interested in a data plan so that I can use my phone as a modem for my iBook. Unlimited data would be preferable for a reasonable amount. Bluetooth would be a nice feature but not necessary.

I'm wide open as far which phone to choose. I don't care if it has a camera, but I would like decent email capability.

I'm up in the Greensboro area and I travel thru Chapel Hill and it's surroundings to get to my gf's family in Raleigh quite a bit. I hear that Cingular's got pretty damn decent coverage in that part of the state. They don't show any holes on their region or nation map around there. As always give it a shot for the 14 day trial period and see what you like. But from what I've seen the two big choices are VZW and Cingular. Course that seems to be the case in most places now. Sprint down here sucks and I've had some bad dealings here lately with ALLTEL. USCC seems too spotty, they roam on VZW a lot, so if that's your plan ya might as well hit up VZW in the first place.

I am in Chapel Hill all the time. My Cingular gets great service. I sell Cingular, but that doesnt mean i hate Verizon. but i will say this, If you are looking for Mobile To Mobile for you and your Girlfreind i would be a little worried with Verizon because they dont really have a license here, and that means there mobile to mobile network suffers. This leads to alot of verizon people in our area having some trouble with billing, because they can be out of the M2M area and not even know it. And that is something to never have to worry about with Cingular. But as far as a card for your modem, i would suggest you aim that question towards CainMarko or Phonepimp3376, they will know what they are talking about.

Bullshit.

We have native VZW coverage in Chapel Hill. Do you really think that we wouldn't have coverage in the Research Triangle area? SOUTH of Chapel Hill, there's an digital Extended Network area, through ALLTEL. Since we have a roaming agreement with them, no roaming fees, and most features work transparently with ALLTEL.

The aircards are awesome. I use a PC 3320 at work, and it's pretty quick. It's not DSL-quick, yet, but the Broadband Access is coming, not sure when it will hit NC. I get anywhere between 50-80 Kbps peak times, and I'll hit 144 Kbps every now & then.
