Does anyone have any thought on why it would be advantageous to VZW to contract for digital only phones?
It would seem to me that they would want to cover as much geographic area as possible and for the forseable future that can only be done if analog is included in the mix. I cannot imagine that cost is a factor in the decision process. I am no tan engineer but could it really cost that much to include analog in the phone's capabilities?
Even in the Denver metro area I find myself using analog almost every week. If I could not receive any signal I would be considering another carrier.

Some cost is involved that's why only a handful of phones come w/ tri-mode. It would not be cost effective to have all phones be tri-mode. The ratio of people who NEED analog to people who don't is very low therefore enough revenue is not produced to profit from having all phones being tri-mode.

It is an interesting question as to what percentage of folks NEED anolog. I am in a major metro area Iand Iuse it every week right in the city. Without it I would have a no service notification.
What are other's experiences with this? How often do you have no service even in a metro area?

I live in Minneapolis. Although I don't need analog within the city, I do need it within an hour of my home when I drive into western Wisconsin and in the area around Red Wing, Minnesota, which is near the Wisconsin border and is roughly 45 minutes away. Since I view a phone as primarily a device to make calls with, not a camera or other such device, I would not be without an analog phone. I too would like to see a wider selection of trimode phones in the new phones that Verizon is releasing.

These are all great thoughts but keep in mind the FCC is mandating that analog be shut off one the cell phone system just like the Tv system so verizon is just going the route of a digital only service so when they have to shut it off there is alot less to worry about and only about 4 percent of people even go into analog anymore. -Brian

What is really going to suck are the people in the more rural areas. For example northern Maine. When analog goes off, if the area is not prepared, there will be a big chunk of the area that has no service. (I believe maine is mostly u.s. celllar anyways)
It is indeed more advantageous of VZW to sell dual-band phones (digital only) due to pricing. Digital phones cost alot less than analog phones.
Yet for the customer side of things I tend to steer customers toward tri-mode phones anyways depending on where they travel/work/live.
I'd rather sell the customer that lg-vx4400 for $150 loaded with everything and have a happy customer... Instead of selling them that lg-vx6000 with all the trimmings and have the customer come back cause th...

I posted an article that described how NYC is going to hav 18000 antennas mounted on light poles
If you read other articles you will see there is often fights over adding towers. I do not beleive the FCC will keep to the deadline if the coverage is not in place (too many consumer complaints).
I often travel on major roads between Denver and the metro area including Boulder and I will state that Digital does not cut it.
The carriers and the FCC will have a major fight on their hands with thos millions of us who are not covered.

not sure which bass ackwards way you are traveling from denver to boulder, but you have a verizon tower no more than 2 miles apart in any direction. i would say you need to have your handset checked because it should not be going to analog on any road you would want to travel between those 2 cities.

Through Golden as well as some places on Rt. 6 and I-25. In fact there are many spots that show up analog along major roads.
The other week I was in Estes Park on Rt. 36 (the major road to the town) and I was on analog. Each time I travel on Rt. 285 South I have many spots that are Analog or no service at all.
This is mountain country and it significantly impacts the service even along the major highways.
It is not a daily occurrence but it happens frequently enough in a variety of locations. This is true for my wife's VZW phone as well.

In the Denver Metro area and receiving analog? Have you had your phone looked at or called technical support? Looking at the cell tower density in the Denver Metro area it seems like you should never pick up any signal except VZW unless something is wrong. You may want to look into this more.

I have had the starTAC for years and replaced it many times as has my wife for her phone (before her recent phone replacement).
Just last year they built another antenna near where I live becuse it was a known low RF area (remember this is still Denver proper near Lakewood not the outskirts) and that got me consistant service without dropping calls. Even with this, I occasionally, at my home will go to anolog. Elsewhere in my travels throughout Denver the same will occur.
