I use VZW in an extended network region because VZW obviously is the best carrier out there. Up until a month or so ago I wasnt able to get a voice mail indicator. Now my indicator works and the "1x" appears at the top of my phone. I thought 1x would only appear in a VZW region? My phone roams off of the Altell tower around here. Does this mean that Altell upgraded their service? Could this be the beginning of the RUMORED Altell/VZW merger? I really do want to know the answers to these questions which means they are not rhetorical to start any rumors. Thanks in advance. 😳

As for whether or not Alltel upgraded their towers in a specific region, VZW does not get any kind of notification of this since they are not our property. As for the merger, although I do agree it would be a great business decision for VZW to merge with Alltel, I have not heard of anything even in the works or Rumor Mill that this is going to happen.

And I seriously doubt it would anytime soon.
...
exactly although it would be wonderful...between the money we would save from roaming agreements as well as less areas where it's only extended network...meaning more areas where all features work...just another little something to shut the Cingular critics mouths...hehehe

Hi Untouchable! What you are seeing with the 1x is the growth of the VZW network in action. They are developing the network so that all areas have 1x capabality, which means you'll be able to surf the web at broadband speeds, picture/video messaging. All depending on what phone & data packages you have.
Having 1x is a very good thing & shows they are developing the network in your neck of the woods.
...
that might also be the case there...but if yo8u are in extended network( roaming indicator flashing) then the VZW network has not been updated to that area as of yet...that means you are off the VZW network but we work with another company so you're not charged for roaming
...
If you are in fact hitting an ALLTEL tower & not a VZW tower, they might have upgraded that particular tower from IS95 to 1X. I've noticed a general improvement in Extended Network roaming on ALLTEL lately, this just might be another sign. Consider this a good thing, whatever it is.

As brief as I can give a description about VZW extended network. "It is a contract agreement between VZW & other carriers where by so long as customers have available minutes to use from there plan they can use the extended network towers & not get roaming charges." So to answer the question about the "1x" indicator, if the extended network indicator is on, and you show a "D" on the screen most likely you will have access to voice mail. The "1X" indicator is only for the use of such things as mobile web, & Get it Now service, & picture sending. And, you have to be connected to a VZW tower not an extended tower for those services, they cannot be used on extended network at least not yet.

Correction on this Metal Guy, He's already been wrong in another post. I figured he'd be wrong here. 1x is for data products, but it also gives you the clearest, most crisp voice signal as well. You should see some difference in your voice service once you enter a 1x area. Although most phones are just as good in a regular Digital area.
...
Nope, well yes it does give a better crisp sound as you put it but the 1x services referring to just mobile web, get it now, picture sending is specific to your own provider. Even if you get 1x on your screen but your on extended network you can't use those service except on your own provider. If anyone questions that feel free call VZW and ask for tech support and ask them yourself.

For what it's worth, I'm in west area CRT and previously in Tech Support; 1X referrs to the technology that multiple companies use to handle their data services; check the glossary in this very website; 1x in an extended network does NOT mean these services (ie Get it Now, Mobile Web etc) are not available on an extended network; Voice mail is only available if you dial your entire MTN not *86; the indicator is not telling you any more than the provider offers that service with their network; stike 2 metalbandit

Well if your give me strikes on my comments then your gonna have to give the tech agent that advised me about 1x service because most stuff that I have knowledge about regarding tech issue I have acquired from other tech's. So you maybe right you maybe wrong. The tech agents that I have spoke with maybe right they maybe wrong. It takes way to many man hours to do research for information from the resources that VZW provides us. A lot of it we have to depend on others, that have more experience. I don't verizonccemp if you have atime limit for your inbound calls but mine is 6min, that's it. Not trying to make excuses for myself but that is a fact. We help to help each other out.
