Question about renewal of contract

cshlafer

I haven't checked this out with a VZW customer service rep yet, but in an effort to save time, I'll pose the question here.

Background: We have a family plan. One of the lines was eligible for an early upgrade, so my son got a new KRZR a couple of days ago, along with an extended service contract, through Best Buy. He totally hates the phone, since he wants to get ringtones though outside sources and can't anymore. (He had a Moto E815 and could email tones to himself that weren't available through Get It Now.)

I did some research and decided to migrate gradually over to Cingular as each of our four lines' contracts expire.

If I return the phone within the first 15 days, will that void the renewal of the contract, or am I stuck with t...

i think on the motorolas he might be able to record the sound/music he wants with the voice recorder and set those as ringtobes.

If you return it with in the 15 days, everything resets back to what you had, including the contract. On the extended service contract you got thru best buy, I don't know how they treat that. But, either way, since you bought this at best buy, I would not waste time in returning it, because if you go past that 15 days, best buy will not do a thing for you. Get to best buy now, dont let the 15 days lapse, or you are locked into contract on that line.

Thank you!

I'm going back with it today; I'm just a few days out since purchasing it. I sure hope you're right. It would help me a lot. I'm anxious to switch carriers and this would have put a serious kink in that process.

Just FYI, Best Buy has a 30-day money-back return policy on their cell phones--but of course this would just cover the phone itself. Obviously I'm not waiting, since the 15-day limit from the carrier is the one that applies to the contsract itself.

Again: Thanks a lot!

Hell naw, my friend. In the call center that I work in, many people have different carriers (mostly Verizon and T-Mobile).

Just sick of Verizon's annoying crippled phones. Cingular's reputation is decent; I want to give them a try. I like the idea of being able to use the phones internationally. Cingular apparently works well in my area, and supposedly they have free roaming. I have to do more research before I make the switch, but those are the main reasons. Nothing complicated...

true they have free roaming. But they have coverage in every area (98%) that any other GSM carrier has. They only GSM carrier close to them is Tmobile and they have coverage everywere they do. So It would be safe to say if you don't get a cingular tower you aren't going to get any tower!

🤨 Verizon doesn't charge you for roaming, either. It's true that you can use a Cingular phone internationally, but how often do you go out of the country, seriously? I seriously doubt you'll do it enough to justify it being a reason for the switch.

true and I think verizon does the same thing sprint does. You can get a unlocked phone on ebay and sprint will send you a sim card so you can use it internationally. You keep your phone number and all!

Note: Just returning the phone won't automatically void the upgrade. Make sure the rep calls VZW to have them cancel the upgrade and reset the dates, Best Buy most likely doesn't have the power to do that themselves.

Yeah that's what I figured. If the B.Buy people don't call VZW from the store when I do the return, I'll call them myself to make sure it's done right. After all, I need to get the old phone reactivated anyway. Thanks for the tip though.

I always have to call VZW after adding a line to make sure that it's added on.

Thanks to all for your input. I'll keep it all in mind, but I'm leaning heavily towards giving Cingular a try anyway. If it looks like the switch is going to cost me "up the yingyang", I'll have to reconsider.

Thanks again for the advice.

If the line was up for early upgrade then you probably have as much as another year left on the contract just my 2 cents. make sure you are rock solid on your contract end dates. As much as I don't like seeing people leave I hate seeing people getting screwed unless they are total douche bags.

I'm surprised no one else asked this, but if you're wanting to gradually switch your lines to another carrier, why would you let your kid do an upgrade in the first place? If he had loved the phone, then you'd still be stuck under contract. Doesn't make much sense to me.

If you re-read the original message, I decided to look into making a switch AFTER upgrading my son's phone. I started asking questions about other carriers and doing some research, which BTW is still ongoing.

You must be doing something wrong if you can't email ringtones to the KRZR. I sent 30 of them to mine when I had one. It was easier than using the cable.

You're right: I didn't specify that my son was disappointed at not being able to use MIDI files as ringtones anymore, and have since learned that the KRZR WILL probably accept emailed mp3's as ringones. That must be what you were emailing to your phone?

Unfortunately, my son likes video game ringtones, and a vast majority of those from the online freebie sites at this point in time are MIDIs, not mp3's. (Of course even with his e815, he had to download them to his laptop first and email them to himself if he wanted something besides what was offered through Get It Now.)

I've since found out that few if any of the new high-tech music phones read MIDI files anymore. But I'm still irritated by the seemingly nonchalant attitude VZW has abo...

Update:

I got the phone returned and the renewal voided. No problem. Both Best Buy and VZW have very good customer service in my experience (for the most part), which is why I want to find out more before making my final decision about switching to another carrier...
