Sprint Nextel Announces Plan to Lay Off 5,000 Workers

By Charles Babington and Kim Hart

Tuesday, January 9, 2007; Page D03

Sprint Nextel, still losing cellphone customers despite changes in management and operations, plans to lay off about 5,000 employees in the coming months, executives announced yesterday.

The Reston-based company suffered a net loss of about 300,000 wireless subscribers in the last quarter of 2006, said company officials, who projected lower sales for 2007 than analysts had anticipated. Most of the planned layoffs will be completed by early April, they said, and will be spread...

Sprint Nextel's multibillion-dollar effort to upgrade its networks continues this year, including $7.1 billion for its core wireless networks, $600 million for its Internet services, and $800 million for WiMax, a high-speed wireless broadband network. The company is in the process of combining Nextel's "push-to-talk" technology, which continues to lose subscribers, with Sprint's wireless network. Last month, Sprint released a hybrid phone compatible with both networks.

That says it right their. They are focusing on that. They feel their wireless network is more important business expense then stores that overlap other areas. Wow what a bad idea for a wireless company to concentrate on their wireless network! This was going to happen and i...

Because those Sprint people are going to need a job and they be coming to the other carrier's wireless stores and Customer Service Centers spreading their Sprint poor customer service into everything wireless. Was that over-dramatic?

Let verizon buy alltel and see how many people they lay off! I love people that know nothing or retail and Business making comments like that. You can't absorb a company that is were you serve to without havening to many employees. It is a (sad as it is for the people that will lose their job)unnecessary expense!

Beside the sadness of people losing their jobs, I believe a huge concern to Spint/Nextel customers is the potential ripple effect.

In other words when workers see their co-workers dismissed they have three choices to make.

1. Rationally understand that the merger caused this and that the outcome was not unexpected so therefore the remaining workers MUST be more productive and customer focused if the workers left want to keep their jobs.

2. Get down, develop a poor "I don't care, I'm next attitude" which will transcend to the customers and make things even worse at Sprint-Nextel and ultimately cost more jobs.

3. Do nothing and hope it all turns out okay.

This may not be unexpected but, it is a test of management to see what kin...

As a consumer I could care less. As a businessman I prefer that there are more options than 2 for wireless service providers.

I feel bad that 5,000 people lost their jobs in this economy. But being a manger for Verizon Im glad that their work force will be thin out.

"in this economy"? I am confused. The last stat I saw was nationally the unemployment rate was 5% or less, or as I prefer to look at it-95% of the people who want a job, have a job.

I thought most of the overalpping positions had already been cleared? All nextel stores in my area have been closed if a sprint store was nereby( the rest renamed). I know 4 stores that closed more than 6 months ago. This sounds more like they are cutting jobs because the company is doing so crappy. It said they fell below what they were projecting. It sounded more like if the company would have been more successful most of these jobs would have been saved?

I will admit that i didn't read every post so I apologize in advance if this has been discussed.

It is more appalling that 5,000 more people are going to loose their jobs than anything. Sure the TV networks and economic analyst say that the forecast for the economy in 2007 looks bright. But for what sector of our economy?

I know it might be off topic but that is what has or is happening in other areas of our economy

actually it is bad news for vzw workers. Layoffs mean more people out there looking for jobs. Alot of times call centers locate near one another. I don't know if this is the same with vzw and sprint...
