Well there you have it GSM and CDMA all wrapped up into one phone, the Samsung 790. So much for the debate over which is better CDMA or GSM. Now it's a mute point if both are offered in the same phone. So now the debate will push to the "5th" Mode phone. 🤣 🤣

Umm, that phone will only work on 900/1800 GSM. It won't work in the states where we're 800/1900. So what's your point?
...
VZW does not offer GSM... they offer that phone because the rest of their phones don't work overseas... Vodaphone isnt going to change to cdma, so VZW has to have a gsm phone for international roaming. Oh, and all your pretty little VZW features will not be available when using it internationally either... so enjoy your expensive trinket.
...
Of the phones Cingular offers that works abroad, does their pretty little features work abroad?
Can you define "pretty little features?"
...
yes. Voice and Data work while roaming. Yay for GSM.
...
With the upcoming release of the a840 from Motorola, all those "pretty little features" are supposed to work.

It is most definitely not over - if you travel frequently to Japan, like I do, the only choice in the US if you want one phone is GSM. The only dual-network chips use both GSM and CDMA, the J-networks use CDMA, and the J-CDMA is not compatible with the US CDMA. That leaves Verizon and other US CDMA carriers out until everyone adopts WCDMA sometime around the time that I no longer care whether I have a cell phone or not.
...
Maybe... we will see. The phone has to hit store shelves first...

Voice works just fine for CDMA while roaming. Your point?
Data, yeah I will agree CDMA could be better, but it is because there are so many different options for the providers to use as a platform.

Verizon does carry the Samsung a790 with the SIM car to use it in Europe - for those rare few of you who commute from Europe to the States on a frequent basis. Admittedly, the phone service isn't cheap, but it wouldn't be for any US GSM phone in Europe - would it?

If you have an unlocked GSM World phone... It would be cheaper than anything offerend on the states... Just buy a European PPD SIM... and have your US Service SIM...

Luckily, I'll be mostly untrackable here, so here it goes...
If you need cheap service in Europe and don't want to bother with all the mess of getting it working through VW, get on a plane, step out, and find the nearest place that will sell you a SIM card and be more than happy to unlock it for you. They'll do it for any GSM phone, too, not just the CDMA/GSM Samsung - another thing AT7T or T-Mobile might forget to mention. Sure, we're talking apples and apples when we talk about US GSM and EURO GSM - except it's Figi and Granny Smith apples with "world-wide" GSM coverage.
