tri-mode vs. all digital

Is there a general consensus regarding weather to get a phone with tri-mode or all digital? The sales reps say there is no difference, at least in the area (NJ), but some how I think they are told to say that. The phones that have the tri-mode seem to be the older models, such as the Samsung 650, which I feel are lacking key features, like an outside display. The more advanced version, the 670, has more features an outside display and camera ( don’t need or want) lacks the Amp signal. Do I really need this signal?

Is it me or do vzw’s phones suck compared to the competition?

the 650 is not old at all. You only need analog if you're in a fringe or rural area. If you live in the city and hardly travel out then digital would be for you.

You do have 15 days to try the phone out--get a trimode phone and see how many times it goes into analog, if it never does then you don't need a trimode phone

Hey hateatt,

Like schnozejt said, if you don't travel much then it might not make much difference. If you do, however, and came on a place on the map where you just ran short of VZW signal, that analog would allow you to roam on another carrier's tower(s) if you really needed to make a call.

We all know roaming ain't cheap, but just something to keep in mind when shopping for phones. I don't work for any cellular companies; just passing along what I've read in consumer mags and the wsj before.

Good luck,

All phones allow you to roam on other carrier's towers.
W/ analog you can roam on other analog towers or be in an extended analog area.

The reps aren't programmed to tell you different; they don't make more commision if they sell you a digital phone.

Correction, not all phones have the ability to roam on other networks...Nextel. No other company supports iDEN therefore there is no roaming with Nextel because your phone doesn't work

I've read that, for example, a GSM phone from Cingular won't roam on VZW's CDMA towers and vice versa, that the differing digital technolgies don't "talk" to one another.

I've seen it reported in CR and other places that analog kind of serves as the universal language between carriers.

Verizon has roaming agreements with certain carriers that provide analog service. So even though you are receiving an analog signal, this does not necessarily mean that you're roaming.
