what is the point in being with verizon with free roaming from sprint?
i was using verizon for around three years. there service is good but not great. before i switched to sprint i was told i could roam for free on verizon. which is true. i can roam with both voice calling and data for free. so what i want to ask the people here, what is the point in staying with verizon? if you prefer verizons service, you could always get a cheaper plan from sprint then set your phone to roam. you get a cheaper service, larger network coverage, and you are not forced to buy verizons overpriced get it now garbage. there is tons of free software for sprint phones out there. i am using opera mini and gmail myself and they are completely free. verizon wanted me to pay extra for pop e-mail access.

...umm, I don't see much of a price difference in calling plans anymore. The same 700 min for two phone dealie is $69... The only difference is n/w starts at 7PM on weekdays instead of 9PM...

Blue is right. Sprint has a thing if you use more then 50 percent of your minutes roaming for 3 straight month they can(and have some times) drop you. Personally i love sprint and the new M1 and do myself enjoy roaming off verizon towers but watch how often you do that.

Just leave your Sprint phone in automatic and you will go onto a Verizon tower when needed and stay on a Sprint tower most of the time... then you don't have to worry about the 50% roaming rule.
And yes, it's true when you put a Sprint phone into roaming a large amount of the time it will lock onto a Verizon tower. Anyone who has ever looked into the contents of a "PRL" file (Preferred Roaming List) will see this.

Ok for starters sprint sucks and I don't want to have to force my phone to roam! why you ask? because I want my network to have the CAPACTIY to handle the majority of my calls within its own network, verizon capacity is much great then sprints! you might think they have the same call clarity but the MAJORITY of the people don't, sprint network sucks and drops allot of calls, I've used it and experience what most of America has, a crappy network! My understanding of roaming agreements is that carriers agree to pay a competitor for their customers having the ability to roam in areas where the home carrier does not have coverage. No carrier wants its customers to roam off a competitor's towers when it has coverage in a particular locale. Both Verizon and Sprint use PRL (preferred Roaming List). On an America's Choice II plan, you got List A and List B. When your phone looks for a network it looks for List A (Verizon towers) 1st even if another provider has stronger signal. If it cannot pick up a Verizon signal it goes to List B (roaming partners) this will search for the cheapest partner down the line until it gets a signal. On any Verizon PRL, Sprint is dead last... and you will probably get No Service before you pick up a Sprint tower. If you have an Amer Choice I plan, there is a List C for roaming on someone's tower who isnt a roaming partner. Prolly because if you have Sprint and you're in an area that has both Sprint and Verizon towers (which is a lotta places), I'd think that your Sprint phone is going to go with the Sprint towers (no need to roam then, right?). And because of the frequency Sprint uses (they're all or mostly 1900 MHz), they don't get good reception indoors a lotta times.
I know, I used to have Sprint, and they sucked indoors. VZW is way better there (they seem to have a lot of 850 MHz coverage), and in general too. 😎
Plus, if you roam on VZW too much with Sprint, don't they dropkick you off their plan and you have to pay the ETF? I don't much like that either.

Name them? Put up some links? I know people right now that don't have any Sprint coverage in their area, that use Sprint, while roaming the entire time, and have never had any problems. Sprint has reciprocal roaming agreements now. That means their customers can roam into other networks for free, and those on the oposite network can do the same onto Sprints network. Sprint doesn't cancel accounts for too much roaming. The only carrier I have ever read about doing that, is T-Mobile. That is it!

Well, I can tell you that Us Cellular shuts you off for the 50% rule, as I am a customer that they did that to. Trust me, if it was not for their 50% rule, I would still be with them.

You make good points but I think the only point needed to be made is: Look at the numbers and see that it doesn't matter what Sprint is offering for less, people just don't want to deal with the company period... They'd rather pay Verizon more and deal with them.

I have another reason not to use Sprint. I wouldn't be able to get a local number, and I would have to drive about 800 miles to get to the nearest sprint store. Verizon and Alltel are the only two carriers where I live (Montana). Some people don't even have the option of Sprint, unless they want to be Roaming with an out of state number, wondering if they are going to be kicked off sprints network because sprint would rather use roaming than build out their own network. Verizon even has EVDO coverage in Montana, whereas Sprint has no native coverage in Montana. So yes, there are many reasons people would choose Verizon over Sprint.

I can speak for both carriers, because I pay for both of them each month. I live in the ATL and I have Verizon samsung a950 and my 15 year old has Sprint treo 700wx.I do admit that sprint is cheaper than verizon, but I also can say in my area Verizon is the dominate carrier. The reason I have verizon is b/c every and I mean every one that I talk to almost ranging from family to clients have sprint, and if I add it up verizon actually saves me more money in the long run than any other carrier.
