Unlocked or Locked Phones

I read somewhere that if you purchase a phone from a wireless carrier and that phone doesn't have their logo printed on the phones exterior means it's unlocked? Is this true, probably not, but I am just wondering. Also is their ways to get phones unlocked without contacting the carrier?

So if I called Nokia and asked them for the unlock code for my 3120 and 6010, will they give it to me? LOL

No. That is not true at all. Manufactures WILL not unlock a phone because of the agreement with the wireless providers. Only the wireless provider that the phone is locked to can unlock your phone and most providers will not do it. As for the logo doesn't mean that it is locked or unlocked. Most AWS phones that are comming out now donot have the AWS logo on it but are still locked. I'm not sure how to tell if a phone is locked other than just trying to put a SIM card in it. Usually those phones are locked though unless you bought them from a special retailer.
