The $41 billion merger between Cingular Wireless LLC and AT&T Wireless Services Inc. won approval from the Federal Communications Commission yesterday, according to federal sources close to the agency, paving the way for major changes in the lucrative wireless-phone market.

The FCC and Justice Department plan to announce on Monday that both agencies have signed off on the deal, although the regulators will require Cingular to make some concessions in return, according to the sources, who declined to be identified because the decision has not yet been made public.

Yeah! It's about time...

However, I wonder why this news doesn't appear anywhere else online? It's not in the NY Times, it's not on Yahoo's message board for AWE, it's nowhere else to be found.

That's because most news sources probably won't put it in print until the approval is officially announced. You should see it in print Monday or Tuesday.

One more thing to bring up about the takeover, with Audiovox annoumcing today, plans for an EV-DO phone and Sprint and Verizon upgrading their networks, will the merger happen soon enough for customers seeking higher data speeds to stay with The New Cingular when they upgrade to WCDMA, or will other carriers succeed in that area first?

WCDMA is already up in some markets. These things take time get get set up but things are already well on their way. Right now AWS has 2 UMTS/WCDMA phones out.

Approval Expected for Big Cellphone Deal

Federal regulators will formally approve Cingular Wireless's $41 billion purchase of AT&T Wireless today, company officials briefed on the matter said over the weekend.
