AT&T / Cingular Combined Footprint - Wider or Same?

I am a long time customer of a competing service provider. I have been happy with the coverage they provide in my primary usage area (Northeast) and coverage in other locations around the Americas.

However, I'm not happy with their customer service nor their phone offerings - not to mention their heavily restricted introduction of new technologies.

I'm investigating alternatives. I was a customer of AT&T many years ago and was not very happy with their coverage or their overloaded TDMA network. I am continue to be interested in a very wide area of coverage, especially the Northeast. I would also like to be able to carry the same phone when I travel overseas rather then having a CDMA phone locally and a GSM phone when in Europe.

Depending on where you live in the Northeast, Cingular could be a great move.

For starters, AT&Ts GSM network in the Northeast was, and is very reliable. I have personal experience with their GSM network in the Mid-Atlantic states (Pennsylvania in particular) and have never experienced any problems. With Cingular's network combined with AT&T in these areas the coverage only has room for improvement.

If you were to switch to Cingular today you would have the benefit of being able to utilize both Cingular and AT&Ts GSM networks entirely because they are now both, one in the same.

As far as size goes, Cingular has the largest all digital network in America and held this title even prior to the merge. Verizon's digital network is sig...

Thanks for the response. I don't think the coverage maps that the sales folks show potential customers is detailed enough to help. They are too high level and do not pinpoint holes in coverage that you would see if you 'zoomed in' on any of the coverage areas.

With that said, I'm trying to get past all the sales hype of these networks and understand what the reality of coverage is. I live in North Central New Jersey (along 287 / 78 cooridor) and work in New York City. I have family in the Poconos and South Jersey, traveling to and from these areas often. Coverage in between is as important as having it at the destination. Additionally, I travel a bit across the U.S., spending a fair amount of time vacationing in a variety of pl...

Now that I know where you will be needing your service most I think I can give you a little better advice.

I am sorry to say that I can't speak from experience in those areas but I have heard countless AT&T and Cingular customers give praises about the coverage in NYC. AT&Ts network in NYC was outstanding. Cingular had a joint agreement with T-Mobile to share their network in NYC. Now after the merge, Cingular has switched to AT&Ts network as its primary network, but its agreement with T-Mobile is continuing for the next four years. So your service in NYC should be superb whenever, wherever.

I cannot comment about Cingular/AT&T service in most of New Jersey or any areas in between New Jersey to NYC. I'm sure the service is fine bu...
