ATT GSM phones on cingular network

djbork

Does anybody know what the compatibilty will be with the att gsm phones on the cingular network. CIngular tells me that I must buy 3 new phones to work because it is new gsm technology. I have 2 nokia 6800's and a 6820. Would unlocking the phones and getting a new gsm card work ? Any info about this topic would be appreciated.

Thanks

No, since the at&t phones only support 32K sim cards, and we provide 64K sims.

Couldn't djbork just get an older Cingular SIM card off of eBay or somewhere and put them in the unlocked phones? Aren't there still some Cingular customers using the old Cingular 32k cards?

Yes there are. BUT sims are linked to the numbers they are originally activated on. If the card has been used it'd be duplicate.

I suppose the old 32k cingular sim would work, but I guarantee nothing.

You could probably use the ATT fon and cingular old simon their network fo rbasic voice calls, but you will not be able to text, mms, use data, have any troublshooting from reps or tech, No guarantee of service, no warrenty exchange or insurance,, nothing. With th eprices of cingular phones right now, i would recommend spending a bit of money to ensure you receive a full experince both in terms of phone capabilities, customer service and technical support.

He said he already has the phones so why pay for a new one if you don't have to? It sounded like he was trying to save himself from buying a new one. And if that Nokia 6820 is unlocked, he can get the settings from Cingular data support. If that Nokia he mentioned is less than a year old, which I'm sure the 6820 is, he can replace it through Nokia's warranty program. Worse case scenario, you break or lose the current one and then have to buy a new one as a last resort. You can text, you can get MMS & Data settings from support. Just get an older unused Cingular SIM card from eBay. The only thing he can't do is insure it, but there are ways around that too... I was insured a vodafone phone through Lockline and even had it replaced! :-)
