No, I'm pretty sure that Japanese GSM (True 3G) is transmitted on 2100 mhz. Your RIM BB only picks up 850/1800/1900 mhz bands.

You'd be correct. If you go to Japan you either have to rent a phone before you go or buy a phone when you get there. You can do that in the Tokyo airport. There is a Nokia Store there I believe.

you can always check the ATT site:

click on the quick links click on international calls and then follow the prompts...if you want to get a different phone you can look to see whats compatible, but it would probally be cheaper to rent a phone 🙂

Yeah if your an ATTWS cust you can call 1-800-335-INTL(4685) if your inside the U.S. Canada or Puerto Rico if outside there you can call 1-916-843-4685 and they can answer all your questions about int roam renting and buying

Won't work. Japan isn't GSM at all, they are UMTS 2100. No american phone that I have seen will work there. But there is a Nokia store at Narita. So good luck.
