Using S46 in Germany?

I have Siemens S46 with ATTWS. Phone has European GSM 900mhz. It's not unlocked. In April I plan to visit Germany for a few weeks. I would like to use the phone while in Germany for calls to/from US and within Germany. If that at all possible how'd I go about that?

Will ATTWS unlock the phone or should I resort to some 3rd party?

What's cheaper: to use ATTWS international rates via ATTWS SIM (still need to unlock?) or buy some prepaid SIM in Germany (if so which one?)?

Or is it cheaper and less hassle just to rent a GSM phone? If so where?

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

AT&T Wireless does not, and will not unlock phones. You should check out their website on international roaming/dialing.

www.attwireless.com/international

You can see the rates from there.

I would recommend getting yourself an international phone card or to grab a prepaid sim card while in germany. Less surprise charges. You should probably know this, too: while AWS's rates for international long distance and roaming have gone down, we are now passing on to customers the cost that European carriers charge for terminating calls to mobile devices. This can add hefty charges to your bill, and they WILL be delayed -- I can almost guarantee it. You can find what the charges are per country from the site Athena gave above, though it requires a bit of digging.

1) Though you lack 1800 Mhz, you're still pretty much good to go.

2) AWS will not unlock you're phone, seeking a 3rd party solution is the only way to do so.

3) Prepaid SIMs are cheaper (you'll find them here and there when you get there, as well as many online stores... google it)

4) The only reason you'd want to use your AWS SIM and absorb the charges is to have seamless usage of YOUR account (and number). Using your AWS SIM means people dial YOUR number and get connected to you. Using a prepaid SIM means they dial some other number that is international to them (or most people prefer to have the traveler dial them).

5) Why rent a GSM phone when you have one you can use and possibly unlock? Heck, you could even BUY an unlocked ...
