I have had so many people complain about this I thought Id at least give some sorta reason and also cingular charges 18 bucks.......................Well the reason why they have upgrade fees is because the wireless providers do not make the cell phones. No matter what company gives the phone they lose money. Its a "investment" that will cost the company and no matter what a customer thinks these phones are not sold to the wireless provider for pennies. In europe they buy the phone usually at a much higher price than what US customers would even pay without a contract or discount. They take the new phone to whatever company they want and thats that. however, in my opinion you shouldnt pay the processing fee if you get the phone in store. attws claims this fee funds the expense of running a national distribution center.

The fee also covers associated with activation of the phone on your account. IE the backend support it takes to ensure that your new ESN is input into not just our billing system but all the wireless switches out there so you can use your phone. Not to mention the fact that someone has to pay for the man man hours it takes if your activation doesnt go through properly and a CSR calls up tech. So fine maybe this doesn't happen to your account specifically but would you rather an equal fee for everyone or that we determine what each individual activation/ phone purchase costs us and then bill you individually.
