Offer made possible by doubling of company's national GSM coverage area and by significant quality improvements in GSM network

REDMOND, Wash. - AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE) today announced an aggressive new national flagship offer, AT&T Wireless GSM™ America, which eliminates roaming charges for many customers.

The new offer is made possible by the company's doubling of its national GSM coverage area in the last year and by significant quality improvements in its GSM network, AT&T Wireless said.

I need a little clarification...

Let's say I were to sign up today for 600 minutes at $40/mo on the GSM national plan. Come April 18, will my coverage area change (to include the new "no roaming" coverage)?

I would assume that the answer is, "No, you will still have roaming areas." However, an ad in my local paper last week had the $40/mo, 600 minute national plan listed with "No Roaming" as a benefit.

Anyone know the answer to this one?

Thanks.

I signed up two new phones today. Rep told me that my nationwide 2500 minute plan will be grandfathered in to "No Roam" plan on April 18. If not, I return both phones on 30 day trial period.

If you sign up on the Mlife National today you WILL NOT be automatically migrated to the America National Plan. Pursuant to internal E-Mails reps have been advised to proactively inform customers that they will need to call and activate on the new plans manually once they are launched. You will have acess to the new coverage that is being opened up but it will not be part of your in plan coverage unless you make the call to AWS and switch to the America National plan.

I suppose that this means the number of minutes per month will change, but what about the add-a-phone price? If I have the 2nd phone at $10/mo. now, will changing to the America National plan cause me to pay more for my extra phone as well? (I am assuming that the add-a-phone price will be "going back to normal" at $20/mo. on April 18... this may be a bad assumption.)

Thanks.

From what I have read, the $10 credit for the extra lines will still be offered, but with a 2-year contract renewal. 1-year contracts are still available, but the price for the extra line will be $19.99/month.

Stay tuned to www.attws.com or call customer care for the latest information. Things can change quickly.

This is a cut and paste directly from attwireless.com:

Existing AT&T Wireless Customers

If you have an existing national GSM plan you automatically receive the benefits of the expanded network without doing anything. You now pay no roaming for voice or data – anywhere in the 50 United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

If you currently have a local GSM plan, you can switch to GSM America National by calling (866) 293-4634.

ANYBODY ON THE OLDER NATIONAL GSM PLANS WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET THE COVERAGE ON THE NEW PLANS WHETHER THEY WILL CALL OR NOT-IF THEY ARE AN OLDER GSM NATIONAL PLAN THEY WILL GET TO KEEP WHATEVER MINUTES THEY HAVE AND STILL GET THE SAME COVERAGE AND HAVE NO ROAMING WHEREVER THEY CAN GET THE SERVICE

You can't be grandfathered into something that doesn't exist yet. What they mean by grandfathered in is that you won't be forced to change your plan once the national plans expire. If you want the America National no roam anywhere in the U.S.A. you will need to change to an America National plan. if you don't like that, then take your phones back and cancel within your 30 days.

I agree with your terminology point, but it looks like they *are* automatically granting existing customers all the new coverage (and taking away roaming charges). From attws.com...

"If you have an existing national GSM plan you automatically receive the benefits of the expanded network without doing anything. You now pay no roaming for voice or data – anywhere in the 50 United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands."

This is 100% contrary to what I was told by an AT&T Wireless rep two days before the plans changed. Grrrrrr.

as per internal memo's to clarify this subject the cust will be able to use these towers so long as they are within the coverage on their current national plan, if they want to go beyond those boundaries, IE wyoming or the dakotas they will need to switch to the new America National plans

It is the same exact plan that Cingular put out recently. Its a stepping stone for the upcoming merge.
