I recently placed an order to start new service with ATT, and transfer my numbers from Sprint.
I just got an email that says the dealer can't ship my phone because:
"...you are currently not eligible to transfer your existing phone number to AT&T Wireless...
You may become eligible to transfer your existing phone number at a later date. Click here to register for Wireless Local Number Portability - when it becomes available in your zip code, we will notify you by email with the offers in your area!"
What the heck is that all about. I thought number portability was a done deal back in November. I live in a major metro area (between Baltimore and Washington, and was already told once that my numbers could port (can't remember, bu...

I called AWS and their portabiliy hotline told me that all 3 numbers were portable, and that the emial the dealed sent me made no sense.

Actually, number portability will be going to all markets nationwide on Monday, May 24th. As of then, you can transfer any number from any carrier to any other, wireless or wireline. Some companies have been allowing it nationwide since the initial deadline in November for the top 100 markets nationwide, such as T-Mobile and Verizon. Sprint PCS has not been allowing it outside of the top 100 markets. However, as of Monday there will be no reason you can't do it.

cool, its that 6 months after initiating such request bit or whitchever is later thing thats got me, do you know what thats about jd?

its in this part,
-
Wireless carriers outside the Top 100 MSAs that receive a request to port a telephone number must be capable of doing so within six months after receiving such a request, or by May 24, 2004, whichever is later.

That quote basically means that they all had to do it by May 24th, forget the "whichever is later" part. The only way it would have been any later is if NOBODY was asking the carrier to port a number right away on November 24th, then they would have had six months from the time somebody actually requested it. Since people have been whining for this for years, the carriers figured that their deadline for all markets would just be May 24th to avoid confusion. On a separate note... I did a bunch of phones today, but only a couple of them were ports. Go figure.
