Changing phones on the AT&T network...

Greetings,

This may be in a FAQ somewhere, but I couldn't find it, so excuse me if I ask a common question.

I am considering upgrading my Motorola T720 (GSM) to something new... perhaps a V600 or one of the other 850/1900 capable GSM phones I see out there. If I were to buy a new phone (say an unlocked V600) on the net, is there anything special I would need to do (other than move the SIM from one phone to the other) in order to make that phone work on the AT&T network?

Of course, if I elect to go with the V600, I could save a few bucks and pick it up at the AT&T store. However I am a bit hesitant to do so, since I'd like the option of being able to swap SIM cards, given I may be traveling abroad later in the year. Plus I don't w...

However I am a bit hesitant to do so, since I'd like the option of being able to swap SIM cards, given I may be traveling abroad later in the year. Plus I don't want to have to renew my contract since my commitment is completed and I may eventually want to switch carriers if the AT&T/Cingular merger negatively affects my service. =)

If the above won't be an issue with a locked phone, that

Im in the same quandry except Im on M2M TDMA! I don't want to renew anymore with ATT....The jury is out on the merger as well but Im leaning toward Cingular, but am looking at Sprint as well.

Confusing at best.

Just my opinion, but I'd trust a CDMA carrier over a GSM carrier anyday as far as North American service goes.

YEah there ae pros and cons to both technologies. I like the GSM phones better and the service in the heavily populated areas is fine. If I lived on a farm in Montana I suppose I would go with the analog carriers, and I do consider much of Verizon and Sprints "extensive" network analog.......ATT TDMA is terrible in LAs Vegas but the roaming icks up analog signals pretty much everywhere as you get out of town.

Whats really funny is the "big and proud Verizon has many unhappy users here in Atlantic City while T Mobile gets signals where even My ATT phone doesn't. Thats kind of turned me off paying the premium for Verizon service (along with thrie sales reps).

Would you explain what CDMA=proprietary means? You threw all of us off. I'm not sure you understand what the word means.

I would guess he means you cannot buy a CDMA phone on E bay and use it for a variety of carriers.

CDMA phones are made exclusively for their own respective carriers and that would indeed be considered proprietary. The huge number of choices in phones to the GSM carriers and interchagability of such kind of explains his point.
