Prepay+Old Phones -- What IS the Deal?

I just ditched ATTWS for Verizon as my phone, but my wife had a wonderful idea in that we should activate one of the old phones we have and give it to the teenagers. Interesting concept in that at least they'll be able to call and tell us they'll be late or whatever. I thought it was a swell idea.

I have a string of old equipment from ATTWS. I call their sales and they are more than happy to sign me up for prepay. Except, they won't activate my Ericsson R289LX because it's "too old". And they won't put my recently deactivated GSM phone on prepay, only GoPhone.

Is there some programming on the phone that's actually required for prepay, or is ATTWS again jerking me around in the fashion that drove me away? I spent an hour on this l...

It's unfortunate. Hate to see good jobs go overseas, but that's just one more reason I'm finished with ATTWS. I'm tired of the different answers and the brick walls.
