From VZW to Cingular (or T-Mobile?) in NYC tri-state?

My wife and I are longtime and loyal VZW users. I'm very happy with their service here in NYC and around and actually everywhere I used it within US. Still two things make me think about bolting to Cingular (or T-Mobile):

1) We frequently travel to Europe for business and leisure and it became annoying and expensive to maintain two basic unlocked GSM phones just to use them locally with prepaid SIM cards. On top of that we both heavily depend upon our Treo 650s and as a result have to carry them around also just to have access to GPS (TomTom6 + portable BT GPS receiver), contacts, lists, documents, MP3s, etc.

2) VZW is very regressive in its phone inventory. I love Treo 650 but its getting old and limiting and I want something less bu...

ok i am a cingular rep and i will let you know what i see about these two phones. ok blackjack has faster internet. 750 doesnt. thats the big drawback to me. but other than that i would go with the 750. also your tom tom will not work with blackjack.

now onto coverage. i have actually heard about issues in nyc because of the tall buildings that we have dead spots. tmobile will actually be worse than cingular so if you do switch go cingular. i am not downing tmobile because i actually use both phones. i have a tmobile mda which is a cingular 8125 and i have a cingular cu400. now its amazing the diffrence in coverage ta tmobile is cheaper but i have alot of dead spots all around with tmobile. i hardly never loose service with cingular. hop...

The Samsung Slider(D807) is not known to have great service anyway so I woudlnt doubt he had worse service. The Treo 680 uses Palm OS BTW.

But try Cingy out for 30 days urself, if its crap then jsut cancel and pay for the days you had the service.

i am a sales rep on long island in the tri state area ( especially eastern long island)and in general we have better reception than t-mobile. your best bet is to talk to your frends/coworkers and see what they have and how they like it. also go get a cingular phone but don't port your numbers then if you like it you can then port your numbers less hassle if you don't keep it.

Thanks for reply. Ultimately I want to keep/port my existing number. Trial I assume will give me a new number. If after 30 day trial I like the service what should I do to keep my existing VZW number?

Go back into the store you purchased the phone at and have them call the port center to replace the number they gave you. Or you can do it yourself 18668027560. You will need your vzw acct number.

I don't live in NY, so I can't comment on coverage. One feature difference between the 750 and the Blackjack that may be important to you: the 750 has 2100MHz UMTS and the Blackjack does not. That means you can use Europe's 3G networks with the 750. With the Blackjack, you can only get EDGE data speeds (which may be fine for your needs).

yes the 750 has an international 3G frequency...but all i can say is that international data is at a per kilobyte rate...with the 3G service you will be more tempted to do things on your phone but it could be very costly when you come back....

i would imagine that all you would need though is email service and edge will do just fine.

True in Europe (and most places). In Japan and South Korea, edge is not available.

well your friend that has the slider samsung prob has the d807 and for some reason the pone gets very poor reception......

If you want good reception with your device the Blackjack has great reception....and will use cingulars GPS nav not sure if it will do anything with you GPS.....blackjack can only view docs so your ok there if thats all you want....

Yes T-mobile is a GSM carrier but there is no ocmparisson with them to cingular their network is far more advanced than t-mobiles and knowing this they charge as such....but cings prices are the same as verizons voice plans with the addition of a bigger MOBILE to MOBILE community and ROLLOVER minutes...

Cing as more towers per year than any other service so if their is an outage some...
