How long will TDMA last?

JohnW

I was reading in one of the posts that TDMA was going to be discontinued. Is that correct? If any of you Cingular reps are allowed to say much, then how much time is left in the tdma tank?

I've got a couple of older family members that have been with Cingular for 4-5 years and have never upgraded to GSM. How much lead time will they get if/when this is about to happen?

Thanks

probobly a few more years before the towers start to be "turned off" to TDMA, but analog will be gone in the next 6 to 9 mnonths from what i heard. All new towers going up will be GSM, no more TDMA expansion, just so you know.

And I think there'll be some people in some areas who don't give a fig about GSM seeing as their TDMA service works great where they live and they have no reason to change over. Now, if I can get my friend to stop calling and bitching about the crappy service he's been getting since going over from Cingular TDMA to Cingular GSM...

things will only get better for GSM from here on out. esp. after the ATTW acqusition is official.

At least in terms of coverage.

No, we were referring to network quality aka call quality, which seems to have deteriorated in his calling area since switching over from TDMA...

the drama queen rarely as anything to say except how his "friends" are griping about Cingular. well, drama, have your friends post. hopefully they are smarter than you. But honestly, that seems to be where alot of VZW employees get their info about the competition. From a friend... or a friend of a friend who knew a guy who once had bad service. 🙄

Hey, the guy has a serious gripe, Cain. His service isn't as sharp with Cingular GSM. And he doesn't post on here...so what? Big deal.

Is Cingular putting up a lot of new gsm towers in places where the brochures show "full coverage", or are they mainly working on the blank spots on the nationwide brochure map?

I'm just wondering if coverage will get stronger. I have been on a gsm plan for a few months now and it seems I run out of signal more than I used to while driving around. May be the phone (motorola t720) or the towers, or both?

thanx

that phone is a joke... always has sig probs. that may be part of the problem. try to do a master reset on the phone... it fixes most of the sig probs with that phone. it may also be your area. what's your zip?

The cingular gsm map is current but will be larger when attws gets added.

Where I am (LOuisiana), it seems that the tower spacing for the old BellSouth TDMA network was optimal, while the same spacing doesn't work very well for GSM. They ARE working on it though, according to a tech buddy of mine. It will eventually get better.

I'll give a master reset a try. I'm not too far from Paducah Kentucky (42001). I'm past 15 days and not yet up to a year, and if I decided to pitch the phone before insanity sets in, what is a good phone for a mainly rural (low-signal??) area? Can you still get phones that let you plug in a secondary antenna to the back part?

What did you mean by the spacing issue? I don't know how to ask it, but mabye GSM doesn't radiate as far as well as TDMA? You have more capability on GSM, but that compromises the signal somewhat?

Thanks for the input.

I used to live in the area (42003) and travel there many times a year. The GSM coverage does have some holes not listed on the map. I still use a phone with TDMA and GSM for the reason of great signal. TDMA will be around for quite some time, years I assume. The best phone for signal in KY is the nokia 6340 gait phone, but I think they discontinued the plan. If you do switch to GSM try the v400. I haven't heard any complaints about that phone in the area.
