Ok this may be a stupid question, but when do you think cingy will put built in GPS into phones, real time navigation is fine and all but you link that thing up with google maps or windows live and you have one hell of a restaurant finder...

When I had verizon i used it to look up bars and pubs in the local area that i was in if we were bored and out in Houston...which by the way the gps thing would be perfect for the Houston area, there are soooooooo many things to do, but nothing is easy to find because the way houston is set up, for a major metro city, there are more trees there than a damn forrest, and where there isn't a tall pine or an oak there is a huge building so looking off into the distance is not an option. But with built in...

Who knows when, I think everyone knows this is a great idea. We just need to wait until the technology costs go down enough for it to be practical.

It will happen when 3g is deployed nationwide. GSM as good as it is does not have the horsepower of 3g so gps navigation would use too much bandwidth that can be allocated to other things. Verizon, Sprint and Alltel are already 3g (with a different 3g standard) so they have the built in horsepower needed.

With CDMA Technology, all users share the same 1,250kHz wide carrier, but unique digital codes are used to differentiate subscribers. The codes are shared by both the mobile station and the base station and are called pseudo-random code sequences. Base stations in the system distinguish themselves from each other by transmitting different portions of the code at a given time. In other words, ...

Wow. Haven't seen an intelligent post like this in a while.

He's exactly right, GPS kind of comes along with CDMA. GSM/UMTS doesn't need this, so we don't have it.

GSM has its quirks. GSM has its benefits.
CDMA has its quirks. CDMA has its benefits.

It's just that GSM has more on the benefit end of the spectrum 😉

my point is that it doesn't have built in GPS, I am not too concerned with the actual navigation, more concerned with finding spots near me with GPS, which is more than navigation....

I believe you can also use a GPS receiver and use Windows live, I looked at the settings and i believe you can do that.

if you can get ahold of one...i did but sold it on ebay....the HP 6925 has a built in GPS, windows mobile 5.0, pretty sure it has mapping software, wifi, and all the usual..expandable memory...1.3MP camera...the iphone will have a built in GPS and uses EDGE technology just like the HP....

Not sure what the one guy is talking about saying cingy is going to drop GSM and go 3G...when 3G is just an enhancement of the data service side of the phones...GSM is still the technology for your voice communications..3G provides for simultaneous voice and data....

The only thing i can think of that 3G will help you with is if their is some kind of streaming mapping service that could work with a the GPS..

any who find the HP 6925 if you want one...
