Sign of things to come? Real broadband speeds?
Apparently Telstra in Australia lit up thier HSDPA network last year and plan to turn it up to 14.4 Mbps this year!!!! 😳 Hopefully Cingy/Tmobile will get there in the next 4 years.. Maybe... please??
...
like.. what do we need speeds like that for?
its not like we're playing counterstrike or something.
...
wow.. what a visionary you must be..
...
no, a realist. We have no need currently for those kind of speeds on a cell. I cant fathom what the point would be. Hook me up with that speed on my desktop ill be happy.

Thank you for confirming my post.. You may not have a want for it.. but I am sure others would love it.. getting maybe 1mpbs down sucks especially hard when tethered to a laptop if your used to 15mbs at home.. hell even a connection at starbucks/borders stinks...
And with all that bandwidth available companies will start tailoring apps/handsets and content delivery to fill it.. which I happen to think is a good thing.. in 5 years we could be streaming highdef, albums in a minute, really immersive web apps.. all of which would need a big fat pipe..
But why would you need that speed on your desktop? all you need is low ping times to play your counterstrike..right?
...
He might not need those speeds on his phone, but i would love to have those speeds with my laptop.....
did you all see the posting under recent news on the home page...which i would be thrilled to see.
where cingy is looking to skip the HSUPA, and go directly to HSPA+, as early as 2008!!!!
this yields potential
11 Mbps UPLOADS!!!!
and 28 Mbps downloads....
i would love to see that network come out with compatible devices...
lol...instead of HD movies on your t.v. they'd be on your phone!!!

What about TV's with sim card slots for NO-WIRES cable access. It's all in the not-too-distant future with the NEW AT&T merger. I've heard they will be launching this technology in europe as early as next year. Current speeds on their UMTS already exceeds 25MBPS. So it is totally possible to stream Hi-def programming straight to your TV at those speeds. The TV's that have it will probably be pretty expensive for a while, but as with all new technology they will come down soon enough. Think about the possibilities!!!! Phones with built in DVR that can be sync'd to computor or tv. There would be almost nothing you couldn't do. You can already control power point presentation from your phone via bluetooth connection to you laptop. Think of what...

We'll be doing fiber to the hub and copper to the home first with speeds nearing that. Currently, there's no need to make it all wireless.
Either we'll be running new cables to people homes, or we'll be running new cables to the wireless towers to support the bandwidth. There's significant infrastructure buildout either way.
...
What would you rather do? run cables to thousands of towers? or millions of homes?

It should have been an easy upgrade for Telstra. There network just hugs the coast of Australia (it does not cover a quarter of the size of Cingy's). Four years sounds about correct. You know how loooooong it takes them to release stuff 🤣
