Phone prices from cingular.com

I've got a friend who's phone broke. He just got it like 3 months ago. He went into the store & they said it wasn't under warranty. The cheapest phones they had were $150+ and really boring. Anyway, he was wanting me to find out if the phones were cheaper online (cingular.com). I saw where there's an additional online discount for phones, if you're a new customer. I'm curious if anyone knows if there'll still be an online discount if you're not a new customer and not extending your contract??

to buy a cingular phone from the website, you need to sign new service or to be eligible for a 2 yr contract extension.

you can't buy phones from cingular.com without a contract, that retail price displayed is an average retail price, which can be more or less depending on where you go.

The best place to get phones without a contract are

Wal-Mart
Ebay
Local Flea Market
Store with Used Phones

A little OT:

Does Cingular has something akin to VZW which gives you a new phone (actually a $100 discount on top of discounted price) every 2 years you renew the contract for another 2 years?

VZW also allows to buy you a new phone at discounted prices every year you're on a contact.

What are Cingular policies in this respect?

6102i is really bad about the antenna breaking off, and the only thing you can do is to call exchange by mail and have them mail you a new phone for free... 1-800-801-1101

Cingular vs. VZW (for upgrade)

Standard Upgrade:
2 yrs: Cingular 18 months, VZW 22 months
1 yr: Cingular 11 months, VZW 10 months

Early Upgrade
Both Cingular and VZW allow upgrades after 1 year through the contract provider your line's plan is high enough. Cingular requires $75+ and VZW requires $59.99+ for the past 3 months. Remember, this is for the line, not the entire plan like for family plans.

New Every 2
Only VZW offers discounts lower than new customers for upgraders.

Upgrade Fee
Cingular charges $18 for all upgrades. VZW charges $20 for early upgrades only.
