HOW DO I DOWNLOAD FREE MP3 RINGTONES ON TO MY V400??

I just bought the v400 and it supports mp3 ringtones. However buying them at the cingular mall at 2.49 a piece can be very expensive. Does anyone know of a website or download that would be free or even just cheaper. I tried emailing myself an mp3 from my PC and that didnt work. Please help!
if you want to use your own mp3's you need to upload the mp3 to a webspace, then text message yourself the link to the file. when you recieve the text message, just hit the option to "go to" and it will ask you if you want to d/l it.

i just use cingular's site to get them for free ;)
pretty soon Qpass will come down on that Garland... and you know what I mean... ;)
Is there some trick I have to do with the mp3? Is enering the url manually (as I did) different somehow than text messaging the url to myself and selecting go to?
Any ideas?

First of all you have to make sure that the bitrate of the *.mp3 is 40Kbps... Anything higher than that is unrecognized... Second of all it's easier to mms the *.mp3 to the phone than try and d/l from a site... Just e-mail the *.mp3 as an attachment to yourmobile#@mms.mycingular.com
ive used higher than 40k bitrate files without a problem. i has that same problem before, and i think it just has to do with the type of encoding the mp3 is using, (ie. MP3Pro or otherwise) im not at home, so i couldnt tell you mp3 type works best.
Unfortunately, mailing myself at mms.mycingular.com is a hit-or-miss proposition. I can e-mail *from* my phone to anywhere fine. But, 9 times out of 10 when I try to send e-mail *to* my phone it comes back with a "Recipient unknown" message. This happens even if I reply to a message from the phone.
The odd part is that every now an then it works.
I tried talking to the Cingular folks at the store I got the phone from and their response was 1) we really don't know much about e-mail on those phones and 2) can't we sell you a Blackberry if you want e-mail. 🙄
I think I'll pla...

The best way to get "free" ringtones is ,of course, to make them yourself. I had a little trouble when I first started doing this because I was getting an unknown file type error. If you run into that, just make sure your bitrate on your mp3 sample is low enough that it encodes at nothing higher than mpeg - layer 2. Layers 3 and 4 do not work. Once you have that done, just upload it to the free webserver of your choice and type in the link under "go to URL" in webaccess. I'm not at home, so I can't look up the exact bit rate I use, but just experiment a little and you'll find it. The only charges you'll incur are from the data transfer, at either 1 cent per kilobyte or whatever package you're signe

First, I switched codecs from the Lame MP3 Encoder to the Windows MP3 Codec. Then, I increased the bit rate from 32k to 40k. I noticed that as a side effect the frequency jumped from 11khz to 22khz.
This worked. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it was the codec, the bit rate or the frequency, but it worked. I just used the go to url function and downloaded the result from the web.
Thanks all. Now I just need to get my mms mail problem fixed.
