I have (had) been a Cingular customer for around 6 mos or so when this happened. I have 5 lines on the family share plan
Corporate reps came to the major grocery store where I work and got people to sign up
So here I am with 5 new lines, no deposit required, everything fine..........WRONG
On one of my lines, my daughter had the $5.00 text msg plan, she abused that, so I try moving her up to the $10 plan. All of a sudden, my account requests an $800 deposit to continue. I call CS to go from one supe to another, nope will waive the fee. So I politely refuse to pay a deposit for some account I have had for 6 mos or more/never late paid
They tell me if I don't pay by the next billing cycle end date, it will automatically cut me off
So I...

About the only time your credit status would change and a "new" deposit would show up is if you got suspended for non-pay. And is the $800 for all five lines? If so, then that's a really low per line deposit! Or, is there something else in the mix that you left out?

At no point on an active account is there a deposit request for adding or changing features. As the above poster mentioned it would have to had something to do with re-instatement. At which point your lack of bill payment would likely have mared you account standing and based off of an existing account review you would have an $800 deposit for re-instatement. My guess is that by paying your bill you could have avoided the entire situation. I hope you warned the innocent Verizon rep that you were prone to not paying Cell phone bills.

Ahh, it doesn't make any difference. The Cingy bill will go to collections and mar his credit. Whence it hits, if he tries to do anything add'l w/ VZW he'll see the same thing. Multi-million dollar deposits, etc...

Did you ever try contacting the rep who sold you 5 lines?
...
I highly doubt we have the entire story here. They had a reason for the deposit and therefore a reason to cut your service. As for the ETFs, you ported out six months into contract. DUH!
...
Is any of the story correct or is it all fabricated to get a rise out of people on this forum? Sounds more like a VZW fanboy trolling to me. There are just too many inconsistencies. No carrier charges an existing customer a deposit unless their credit status changes and they charge it on any new lines added.
Cingular does not have an $800.00 deposit on 1 line and if it is for all 5 it would total $160.00 each, not an amount that is real, either.

As others have posted, something here just isn't adding up. On Cingular / at&t (and any wireless company for that fact) you'll never be charged a deposit after activation unless you meet a few factors:
* Adding an additional line to a lower credit class
* Reactivation of an account after it's been suspended for non pay
* A deposit was required but not taken at time of activation
The last example is a long shot. It can happen, but I've never heard of it. I don't think we're getting the whole story here, but if you want to go to Verizon.. well enjoy. ETFs are all part of the contract.

??????
Where is your service based?
I have never heard of this happening this far into the service, and the deposit amount does not add up. If it was a $150 deposit that would be $750 total.
Very curious.

I'm sure there's more to this story too.
Did the Verizon rep who signed you up know that you were only 6 months into the Cingular contract? If so, he/she should have warned you about the ETF as it is standard with EVERY carrier and they would have known full-well that you would get hit with it.

your 5 lines of service have been suspended due to nonpayment. you have a problem with the $36 reactivation chareg for each of your lines which totals $180 added to your overdue balance. you feel you are a "special" customer because this is only the first time you ever "forgot" to pay your bill, and the reconnect fees that are charged to every customer new or day 1, should not apply to you? you call the reps and supervisors a few explicatives as you say "i will just go to verizon" and expect that you will not be charged an etf for all 5 contracts that you failed to fulfill, along with the bill you "forgot"? 😲
see your post on the verizon board saying the same thing in 6 months or so, until then happy collection agency fighting!! 😁

its only 36.00 account wide now, not per line.
