I'm hoping someone with experience dealing w/ Cingular's customer retention dept can help me. I've been chomping at the bit to leave cingular due to many bad experiences. I've been out of my contract for a few months and have researched the phone and deal that I'd like with another carrier. I've realized though how many people I know who are also on Cingular and, though they're just as unhappy as I am, they're less likely to change, at least in the short-term. This means no more unlimited m2m. Anyway, I've considered giving Cingular just 1 more year to prove that they've improved (my experience has gotten over the past 6 months), but to get a comparable plan to what I've seen elsewhere (with data service and text messaging) would cost $...

As far as I know, none. The retention plans usually suck, like it will be cheaper but they will pull something off. Last week I saw a $29.99 Nation 450/5KNW. No rollover and no mobile to mobile. I later found out it was retention. As far as text and media, doubt it. Sure, you can upgrade, at the one year price. Or they will offer a free [insert crappy phone here]. If another company is $20 to $30 cheaper make the switch and get a larger rate plan.

He is probably referring to either Sprint, Alltel or T-Mobile. Which means less coverage.

That's what you get for leaving. This is most likely an isolated incident with a couple bad reps. When someone has a bad time they come out of nowhere to complain and we hear about them. But you never hear of the good experiences. I mean, 62 million and change others haven't left.
...
Millions of people eat fast food everyday too, that doesn't mean it's not crap.
...
wow plooky good analogy 😕

Sorry but unlikely. Cingular rarely will match the competition on plans and with only offering a one year agreement they are very unlikely to give you a smoking deal on a new phone.
If things have become worse maybe you are better off switching. Is it network related or what?
...
I heard somewhere that T-Mobile has a price match system for new activations (Plan and phone ect.)
You might want to check them out ... and don't believe anyway about the signal crap
I've had them for two years and now cingular and there isn't a bit of difference ... at least as long as you don't live in the boonies lol
...
I am well aware of what T-Mobile does and where we are located T-Mobile has a very subpar system.

The network has been a major source of my grief. I generally have several dropped calls each week (I don't make very many calls to begin with). Roughly 1/3 of my calls have echoes. There's several dead spots in my area that weren't dead when I was an ATTWS customer before the first AT&T merger. As I said in my original message though, these problems have been improving over the past few months. They were probably able to fix some things as they did the 3G upgrade here a few months ago. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I don't think I've had a dropped call in 2 or 3 months.
In digging further, because of the current $9.99 messaging deal w/ unlimited m2m messaging, Cingular would only need to knock about $10 off of my bill (from ...

Anything is worth a try, Have you actually called on this yet? that would be the next move. However it does sound like exploring some other options may be in order.
While a $10 difference could add up to a significant sum, I would still consider it competitive.
I hear Boston is looking into a non profit wireless network. Come to think if it, it's for wireless internet.. oh well..
...
Well while the girl I spoke to looked through a lot of plans, she didn't have any suggestions for knocking $10 off the bill. Seems to me that my offering to pay them more money than I do now if they'll meet me in the middle would be a reasonable deal.
...
If the plans you are using are suiting your needs, how would want Cingular to take $10 off the bill? Cingular doesn't just change the costs of rate plans, you have the ability to choose between the plans/features available. If you want to save money, go to a lower plan/feature and use your phone less. If you are happy with your current usage patterns, then pay the amount that fits it. Cingular doesnt create individual plans for individual users.
...
My current plan doesn't meet my needs. I'm attempting to upgrade to a PDA plan. Doing so and staying would cost me more than doing so and leaving. I'd meet them in the middle, if they were willing, instead of taking all of my money elsewhere.
...
How do you want them to meet you in the middle though? This is what I don't understand. Do you want Cingular to create a new plan just for you?
...
It's not uncommon for cell phone companies to make up a discount here or there to keep a customer. They may look at older plans that are no longer offered to see if they can squeeze you into that instead, for example. They won't advertise this and will usually make you jump through hoops to get such a discount, but it's a fairly common practice.
...
That is not Cingular's practice. Other companies may do this, but Cingular does not actively place monthly "discounts" on customers accounts as save offers. They will sometimes put you on older plans, but in your situation that will not help. Cingular's single user voice plans have been about the same for almost 3 years now. So an older plan wouldn't be a better deal or have more minutes. When it comes to the PDA plan, there is no other substitute. The most common thing Cingular does to "save" customer's is give them extra discounts off the pricing of the phone, not discounts on monthly service.
...
LOL you are living in the past my friend. Cell phones have become a necessity for the user more then the provider nowadays.
They are very willing to let customers go who want more for resubscribing. They know the other companies will only give you a free phone as well.
Suck it up and pay the piper.
...
How about a FAN discount? Where do you work?
...
Sometimes people just ask for too much. I am guilty of this. You really need to know your boundaries. I know where the line it & I know not to cross it. You should look to be reasonable. There is a reason that Cingular is a giant, regardless if the growth was through mergers or natural. Its just smart business. Dont expect something for nothing.
You want a 1 year contract? To get that, you have to expect to take a ding on something. The way to make sure that what you want is what you get- Do a 2 year agreement. Dont like what they offer, then by all means... Cancel. but dont have high hopes for the next carrier. They ALL have their ups & downs. Cingular has the best for many, which is why so many people stick with them & have joined sinc...
