media Net plan on Blackjack

johnlo

Currently I have the Mot Razr v3 with a normally rollover minutes plan. I have been interested upgrading to the Blackjack. I wanted to know if I can use the Blackjack with MediaNet instead of the data plan since the price almost double.

my bro friend might give me his Blackjack. Can i just go into my cingular account online and order the MediaNet. Once thats active, i can start surfing the net with the BlackJack?

and what happen if I decide to order the Blackjack from Cingular? will they let me use MediaNet with the phone?

I believe the unlimited medianet package is $19.99 vs the Unlimited Data Plan is $39.99. thats alot when you have to add $40 on top of that from voice plan.

thanks.

This has been discussed many times and although the cheaper plan MAY work, it is Cingular's policy that the Blackjack is a PDA and requires a PDA plan. If you are caught using a MediaNet package it may be removed from your account and you may be charged the pay per use rate. If you order it from Cingular there is a greater chance of being caught than just putting your SIM in one. It may work, it may not. But by policy, you are supposed to use the PDA plan.

thanks for your replied Hombre07. ya, thats what I was afraid of.... cingular thinks a smartphone is a pda. i guess if i am getting the blackjack, just hve to make sure its not coming from Cingular. Good thing my brother's friend doesnt work for them. heheheh!

Yep, Cingular thinks the Blackberry's and Treos are PDAs too, even though they're smartphones. It's funny, isn't it?

Wait a sec. Maybe what the company names their product doesn't really determine the devices capabilities? Maybe just because I call this apple a fig, it's not really a fig and still an apple! No, that's can't be right.

What I think is funny is what you define as a pda.. BBs and Treos are Personal Digital Assistants.. with phone capabilities...

They sure are PDAs. That was my point. They're PDAs, but their OS is a Smartphone OS. They require the PDA connect. You can't determine what plan something should be on by the name it was given. Names are arbitrary.

huh? Thats complete nonsense.. PocketPC is a PDA OS.. WM Smartphone on the BJ and 3125 are ...you guessed it..smartphone os's.. MS seems to offer 2 seperate products.. And they are different!

Cingy has a ridiculous policy (which they have every right to use) but it doesn't mean its "right"..

We were talking about blackberry's and treo's. The PocketPC is the only PDA OS. The treo OS and the BB OS are Smartphone OSs.

It makes sense if you follow the conversation.

You mean the Treo 680? As in the #1 PDA on the market for years Palm OS? or the treo 750 that is a PocketPC device?

Mediamax is for phones. Even smartphones have their own expensive plans. You can get whatever you like but I hope they **** your account over.

nope. It needs the PDA connect.

The name that the handset is given by the manufacturer doesn't matter. It requires the PDA connect.

ok a little snarky, but i do have to agree that while the blackjack may not feel like a full pda, it is AS different from a PDA as it is from your basic phone with a mobile web browser. I mean the blackjack has a mobile windows operating system and can handle more complex pages (cabs/java)than basic web browser in say my old samsung c417 so you kinda should pay for the better web that you will use more than on a basic phone. Especially unlimited. I know people who use the web to download mp3's to their phone at 3-4 megs a pop... thats what the chord is for... but anyways yeah with a smartphone you are going to browse more than on a basic phone, which is more use of system resources, which turns into cost.

Weel what they really look at is not that it is a smartphone, but what the capabilities are? Is it worth the users time to use a device that does not have a qwerty keyboard, what size is the screen, things like that. Yes the blackjack has the smartphone version of windows 5.0 in it but you can do a lot more internet on it than say the 3121. (the flip phone htc device) so they don't charge you the same amount it wouldn't be fare, not saying that it isn't expensive but that's the way it is. The name PDA bundle just describes the type of plan, meaning that it would be for a lot of data transfer. It's not that a backjack is a "smartphone," and they are ripping you off trying to get you on a "PDA" plan. The name PDA plan is just a broad name that...

That's not the worst case scenario though. We're not allowed to up your features like that, so if they're on the media max all we can do is take it off or block it. If you're lucky they'll just block it, but common practice is to put on the pay-per-use feature. Then when you get your next bill you're screwed.

At pay-per-use that's over $10 per meg of downloads.

But then you won't be able to use 3G data speeds.

In general I like Dash more than BJ (especially brighter and bigger screen, no camera hump, looks better, imo) but lack of HSDPA and very handy scroll wheel, both present on BJ, sealed my choice.

Btw, both Dash and bJ feel more sluggish than Moto Q.

You can get the 29.99 plan for smartphones and it will work just fine. The only thing you wont be able to do is access Cingular Video but it is garbage. As long as you are not tethering and downloading alot you will be okay.
