Is "3G" a GSM thing?

I was looking at Vodafone's website earlier and noticed that they also call their UMTS phones "3G"
I have never seen Verizon or Sprint use that term. I think Vz uses the term VCast and Sprint uses the term "Power" or something instead of EV-D0. Hmmm, I wonder why?
Other carriers in the UK (GSM of course, what else?) use the term 3G as in:
"You can also check the news LIVE on your 3G phone..."
I thought it was interesting to point out. 😕

It's definitely more of a GSM thing. Although I have seen EV-DO referred to as 3G as well sometimes. But as for marketing I think it mainly sticks with GSM.

Generally through marketing 3G will more often be included with GSM service. I think the common G in each term makes it an easy connection and a logical term to use for consumer understanding.

3GSM. It flows.

one point no one else touched on was vodafones website.....

UMTS also called WCDMA is the technology behind cingular's 3G network......(technically the tech is not GSM, but works hand in hand with GSM networks)

HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA are all upgrades to the WCDMA/UMTS standard...

and EV-DO is a 3G technology(third generation)

WiMax is supposed to be a 4G tech

WCDMA/UMTS and all of it's upgrades are considered collectively to be "3GSM" as they are the natural upgrade paths and are indeed a portion of the GSM family. All of that information can be found under the "Technology" tab of GSMWorld's website.
