Does the wlamrt music trick work with Cingular

I assume everyone knows about cutting and pasting the web address from an online music store's sample clips and then using the Carrier's website to send the address as a link in the body of a text message. This then allows you to launch the browser and download a real music tone, phone must be MP3 or midi compatible, such as V.400 or V.600. Works with ATTWS all the time. Just tried it for a new Cingular subscriber with a V.400, he has Media Works on the account and the browser is working. When the phone starts to download, he gets an error message, something about internal server. Any ideas. Has anyone been successful with this method on a Cingular handset. Thank you.

I kinda do that for my ringtones. I save the file(s) from the webpage onto my computer, edit it if I choose to, and then host it onto my own webspace which I can then download from on my phone. If the error is indeed a server error, the webserver the file is on may have some sort of security preventing this. Another example of things like this is when one tries to link a file hosted on a free geocities account to another site for a forum avatar. In that situation, the images do not pull up. Another common error you might find is an unrecognized file type error. MP3's have to be in the right format to run on a v400 or v600 (1 or 2 layers only). Good luck with the searching. I also suggest you get into .wml scripting language, which wi...

So you have your own webspace or site? Then you upload the files there and direct the browser to that site? This stuff gets crazier all the time. I almost miss climbing into the trunks of cars to install analog car phones, in the early 90's. Sure it was $39.99 and you only got 30 minutes, but people were happy to get a same day appointment, let alone Britney or whatever they want as their tone. Just being nastalgic. Thanks

Yep, that's what I do. I trust my server to work better than the free ones. I'm sure one or two of the free ones will work. I actually host a free website for my friends to download custom ringtones that i've made for them in either midi (polyphonic) or mp3, as well as custom graphics. All they have to pay for is the kilobyte charge. Don't even ask for the url though, it would crash my bandwidth to put it up on a forum =o) (although I don't really know what my limit is). If you do take the time to make your own site, it's something everybody around you will appreciate.
