64K smart chip (SIM card)

Woh, I just read that we'll be getting 64K sim cards to replace the current 32K ones starting November 1st. The only benefit they cited was Enhanced Network Selection on phones that are ENS capable that's supposed to help reception and battery life. Perhaps there will be more positive features released about this later, but I have no clue. Anybody else heard anything about it?

dun dun dun, yeah, i know replying to yourself is pathetic... oh well. I just noticed a little blurb on the same release that said the v400 will be discontinued in early november. Also the larger SIM cards will allow storage of up to 30 incoming text messages instead of the current 17/18. hooray!

Well... the biggest advantage is that customers will be able to use the same SIMS when they upgrade to UMTS in a year or two. That's the MAIN reason for the update. They are introducing it EARLIER to avoid every customer's phone from saying "cingular extend".

They also need the bigger Sim to hold the all RNOC information. You know all the Sid/bid list for both Cingular and AT&T...

The main reason for the 64 k sim is the ENS which more memory is need for the application. That alone is the best thing about the new merger. Cingular actually has a better network than Verizon but you wouldn't know because the old sims automatically use the last network the phone was on (whether it was Cingular or not) and causes the dropped calls and holes in coverage. The new sim will be programmed to find Cingular first and then whoever from there. And is already is stores!!!!

Can I use the new CINGULAR SIM CARD 64K SMART CHIP 3G GSM in my old Samsung SGH X416 phone which I got on the old AT&T network? Will I have the benefit of the new technology? Ever since I got the phone, 4 years ago, I have never had good reception from my home. I have to go outside to receive and send calls. I don't re-up for a new phone as I have a deal that's too good to be true in todays market.
Thanks

Is this just for new phones/contracts, or will cards be replaced in existing phones?

All new phones will... after existing stock is depleted. Those things still cost $25 a piece so they'll just throw out the existing ones. They didn't make it sound like there will be an immediate "need" for existing customers to swap SIM cards. I know I'll be buying one though, even if the only immediate benefit I see is the increased text message storage.

well, actually, all phones sold after Nov. 1st will have the new sims. If you get an upgrade to your existing Cingular phone after November 1st, you will get your sim replaced. Not only that, but you will have to wait to get a new phone, because the 64k sims do NOT work in existing phones.

actually cain the new 64k sims will work in existing cingular legacy gsm phones but they wont be able to get the benefits of ENS. thats the only downside.

....forgot...compatibility is tricky. Yes you HAVE to have a compatible phone to ACTIVATE the sim, so in a since it really won't be compatible unless you upgrade then if something happens you can use an older model without the ENS (but it would affect reception)

from what i was told, 64k sim's will work on old phones, but only to the capabilities of the phone. (for you computer people, it's kinda like mixing PC2100 RAM wth PC3200 RAM, it will only work as fast as the slowest part of the equasion)

The phones will have to be ENS-Capable to utilize the 64k SIM's.

no they are not. currently the mot v220 have started shipping from the warehouse as ENS capable. they have a different SKU # than the non-ENS ones. They are the first. (to my knowledge)

All future phones will be ENS capable. The v400 is not, nor is any other current phone to my knowledge, although i could be wrong. (except the possibility that any phones released in the last month or two may also be, but i have not been told if they are.)

i'm guessing the v400 is not due to the fact that it has been out for almost 11 months now.

the v400 will be discontinued in November... I keep saying all phones shipped after November first will be ENS capable. Is that too difficult to understand? There ARE 3 or 4 phones which are ens capable right now, but not all of them on the website are.

Yeah, I couldn't find it a few weeks ago when I looked either. I don't really think it's there, (but that's cus I don't think techgirl really knows what she's talking about).

On another note I don't think this should just be a shop talk forum, not everybody here works for Cingular or even has Cingular. People get info from us, but we gotta vent our stresses somewhere too.

I had to call CS on another item today and asked about the 64K SIM just for fun.

The person I talked to told me that I did NOT need a 64K SIM for my Cingular phone, and that they are really for people/phones who are coming FROM AT&T.

She even said something about turning the card over for just AT&T network, or turning it back over for Cingular/AT&T. I'm confused. 😉

She seemed to imply that the 64K SIM affects AT&T phones, not Cingular ones; but from what I've read around here, that's not exactly the case?

techgirl you bring up an interesting point and i have a couple of questions that i know either you or cainmarko can answer

question 1

is the 64k sim card larger in dimension then the current 32k sim card?

question 2 (if the answer to question number 1 is no)

lets say I have an unlocked device and i want to sign up for cingular using my own device will they supply me with a 64k SIM card?
