I am seing a bunch of info on the new 64K SIMS. What are they exactly supposed to do? Who is supposed to get them? LOL I am currently have AWS for my service. Will I have to get a new phone post-merger and/or new SIM?
On a side note, will I be able to switch to a Cingular plan once they close the deal? Or do I have to wait until my AWS contract is over? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

You are NOT REQUIRED to change anything if you don't want all contracts will be upheld. BUT if you want a cingular plan you will be allowed to migrate. You will then need to get the new sim and phone which will be given to you at discount for a contract renewal.
...
If I decide to keep the old phone and plan and SIM will they do some kind of update to so my phone will see both networks as home network? Is the discount the same as the 2yr contract d/c price? If I do decide to migrate and sign a new contract that will erase my current contract and the new contract will take effect the day I migrate, right? Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.
...
Sorry for my ignorance, that means if I want to take full advantage of the new SIM, that I will have to get a new phone that utilizes it? How would we as consumers know what phones do or not? I am just kind of confused.
...
The 32k sim currently used is based on GSM in Europe...it tells the phone to look for the last system used (NOT YOUR CARRIER) which is fine for Europe---it's everywhere!!! They all just roam whenever. But the US is catching up and we are mainly driven to have you use our network, but until now there was no way to...that's why I love Cingular people think we fall behind (T mobile offers this, and Sprint has that) then we change the whole playing field and everyone struggle to catch up.....anyway you could be right next to a tower but your phone is trying to find the last one you used (which could be miles)...the 64k will solve the problem and your phone will look for either network (though they will work as one) first!!!
...
So would this be just for GSM or for GAIT as well? But in either case that should help alot in signal capabilities with cingular so that you wont haft to manually search or restart your phone for better signal
...
Well we don't sell GAIT anymore so I doubt it.
...
So if I have an old phone (few months old), then do I get a swap for the new SIM?
...
If you have a compatible Cingular phone you may but the "swap" isn't free.
...
So I can't just exchange my SIMs? (I have T637's)
...
Yeah you can exchange the sim with a T637 but you would have to purchase the sim, when you upgrade the phone you are given a free sim, but any additional ones you will be charged for.
...
If you decide to keep your old phone and plan, nothing will change, they are going to unleash the network to everyone anyway and you phone will only read cingular (but your plan will still judge if you have to pay roaming). You still will be in the ATT billing system. If you migrate your account will be ported (just like starting over) and you will be relinquished from your old contract. The new contract will take effect same day. All sims currently sold match the equipment so that is not your worry, you just decide which phone you like and choose a new plan. The benefits of the 64k sim are mentioned in my previous reply which have to do with your reception mostly.
...
Roaming is included in my current plan. I wouldn't have to worry about another credit check for the migration would I? If I am understanding your 64K SIM statement correctly, all new phones after whatever date will come with the new 64K SIM? Is there a set date for that?
...
LOL, does the 64K SIM require a new phone to be FULLY compatible with the ENS?
...
Yeah, the newer phones have been built with the ENS reader. The other's have not. đ Now this is primarily for ATTWS phones, some 2004 Cingular phones are already compatible since Cingular was the only carrier planning it.

What about the Nokia 3120, LOL, I just signed up with service with AWS a little over a week ago.
...
Afraid not, âšī¸ ATTWS did not request to have 64k SIM and therefore did not request any phone to have ENS compatibility, the Cingular 3120 currently does.
...
Would they have to do another credit check if I decide to migrate?
...
No you would already be a Cingular customer.
...
Well I am really excited now for all this to get going.....I can't wait. LOL
...
Thanks again for the info.
...
So would that T637 be ENS compatible through Cingular and not AT&T?
...
So techgirl, if we have to get new phones, we get them at the 2yr discount rates? How much are the new 64K SIM cards cost?
...
Yes you will be able to get the 2 yr discount off a handset; but SIM cards are included with upgrade.
...
So is it a matter of asking which phones will have the support for 64K SIM and ENS? Or will all the phones after a certain date (do you know it?) have the 64K SIM and support the ENS?
...
On Day 1 of the merger ALL phones available will have ENS and 64k SIM
...
Right on, thanks for the info.
...
You are so crazy. đ
...
Hope your excited about the merger. Aparently to get the 2 year discount you have to be within 2 months of your contract end date ;) or is it 22 months from your last 2 year equipment upgrade. Not quite sure because i work with AWS. Ours is you can get the one or 2 year discounts 12 months after you last discount (doesn't matter if your last one was one or two year).
...
Yeah but AWE customer will be allowed to migrate much earlier after they have Cingular rate plans then similar rules will go into effect.
...
So, how soon from now do you think AWE customers can migrate if the FCC and DOJ plan to announce approval on Monday?

Tuesday, probobly
...
Well, I work for Cingular, and this is how it goes. 64k sim card are able to run more smoothing as they have more memory, and are able to keep you on the system, and allow you to access more places, as well as store more numbers. All new phones will be getting them.
As far as the merger, ATT customers will have to get new phones, but not immediately ;) You can swtich to a cingular plan after the merger and your att contract will be forgiven(ie: no termination fees), and you can start anew with a cingular contract, or no contract, depending on how much you buy the phone for. (most 2 year contract phones are free)
There ya go.

...
As of the proposed "day one" and they can wait up to two years before changing. Annoucement of approval just means the FCC approved the merger/buyout....day one won't be until at least a month later.
...
If the "Big Deal" where to happen monday, yes you could migrate on Tuesday, but for a bit Cingular will not be actively going after ATT customers. If you call in you will be given the choice though. As JessiCSR said, it will be a slow migration, which they are saying may take up to two years to complete.
